Shiado Hostel, Lisbon
Very Good8.0
The Shiado in the shadow of the center of Lisbon
The location is superb. The "free" walking tour from the Place very near to the Shiado was fantastic - even while dodging the drizzling rain. Restaurants in the area that were recommended were very good. The harsh loud sound of talking can be heard throughout the Hostel, and the staff and their friends would talk in the common room and the kitchen late at night into the early morning hours. Signs should be posted advising staff and guests to speak softly after 10 p.m. The distance from our room through a common area to the men's bathroom was a little further than I would prefer, but the design of the building dictates that layout. The women’s bathroom is more convenient to the rooms. The breakfast could be better with a little more fruit, real orange juice, and yogurt. Also, a choice of another item as a substitute for something not wanted would be more satisfying than the limit of one of each item offered. If you want hot milk for your coffee, a microwave is the only option. We stayed 3 nights in one of the small rooms with 2 twin beds. If we did not push the beds together, there would be no space for our small suitcases. Hooks on the wall for hanging clothes would be better than the fabric "wardrobe", and would take less floor space in the small room. A shelf for suitcases and other stuff could have made this small room much more functional. Our suggestions should not be taken as harsh criticism, because the value and convenience of this Hostel is excellent.
