Shopping in Coorg - From Spices to Tibetan Handicrafts

Hotel search

A shopping trip in Coorg offers visitors the opportunity to stock up on organic goodies. Local shops in the district's market areas sell aromatic coffee beans, hand-picked spices, and bottles of golden honey. If you’d like to add color to your wardrobe and home, browse through Tibetan stalls at Bylakuppe to find bright-hued textiles and ornaments.

Coffee and honey

Coorg is crowded with shops selling coffee. In Madikeri, Ganesh Coffee has been in the business since 1965. You can choose between Robusta and chicory coffee varieties while a machine nearby huffs and puffs as it turns beans to fine powder. The heady aroma filling the room is enough to give you a caffeine high. Close by, on Police Station Road, Coorg Progressive Beekeepers' Cooperative Society offer jars of organic honey. A natural sweetener with medicinal value, local honey makes an excellent souvenir.

Spices and chocolate

Pepper and cardamom are grown extensively in Coorg’s plantations and can add great flavor to your cooking back home. At Coorg Greens, near the KSRTC bus stand in Madikeri, jars filled with green cardamom pods, black pepper, cloves, and cinnamon line the shelves. If you have a sweet tooth, then try nearby Choci Coorg. They sell colorful boxes of chocolates made with almonds and hazelnuts, as well as fruity options like mango, lychee, and strawberry.

Tibetan crafts

Right opposite Namdroling Monastery in Bylakuppe, there's a shopping complex selling Tibetan handicrafts and ornaments. As you walk through, you’ll see festive lamps hanging overhead while stalls sell everything from handwoven shawls to handcrafted shoes and jewelry. Look for traditional keepsakes and artwork featuring dragons, mythical creatures, and vibrant colors. Bylakuppe is a tourist hotbed so prices tend to be inflated. Ensure a bargain before you pull out your wallet.
