Not at all what I expected for the money...
When you first arrive the hotel is nice and the staff is friendly. After that they will bug you every day to try and get you to sign up for a time share. Very annoying! The WORST part was the Construction that took place daily, it was a jack hammer literally above our room. I overheard many other guests complaining. ALSO there is NO SPA in this hotel, it wasn't built yet. They will send someone to your room, but come on!! The pool area was terrible, the drinks were hardly drinkable, the staff didn't wait on you at all, you have to wear a rubber bracelet your entire stay to get into the area and it's way overpriced on the drinks for what they're giving you. Also it closed early every night and the staff seemed annoyed if you were there past 8pm. The Hotel staff seemed irritated with me when I complained about the construction noise. They offered to switch me rooms to a lower floor, but on my way down another guest from the floor they wanted to move me to, warned me that it was VERY loud. They demand payment up front and never made any attempts to make this up to me. It was my 40th Birthday and my Anniversary. I love PV but I will NEVER stay at this hotel again. I've stayed other places in PV that were 100 times better. Hopefully they get their act together, the owners should be ashamed.

Beautiful hotel and outstanding staff!
Pros: the staff! The bell boy Oscar was so fast he parked our car and delivered our luggage while we spoke to the concierge, Pablo when we checked in. Oscar made it back in perfect timing to show us to our room and show us how to use everything. Pablo called us a few minutes later to follow up our room and on some of the activities we asked about. He is AMAZING! His customer service is out of this world. Our room was beautiful and clean. And lastly, I like that the hotel is lit up at night so we know exactly where it is if we choose to walk back from the boardwalk from the beach! Cons: not much. We decided to rent a car, which you really don't need in PV. However, since we did drive it was a bit hard to find. There isn't a lot of signage to let you know your in the right area or that it's the hotel. There was also street and hotel construction right outside the front doors of the hotel. Signage or a notification would have been nice. There was also construction being done in the hotel. Since we've been traveling we were exhausted, being woken up by the construction wasn't ideal, however we did sleep in. Most people would be up and out of bed by 10am :) lastly, the pool and beach were farther away than I thought. It's down the hill and across the street from the actual hotel. Not horrible, just not what I was expecting. Overall, due to their old world luxurious customer service and hospitality has made customers for life!

Exceptional 10.0
THE place to stay for the LBGT community in PV
Everything was as advertised - a high quality, luxury resort for the LGBT community. First, the most important thing - the service. From the moment you are arrive, you are greeted by everyone - bell hop, activity coordinator, and receptionist - with a smile, AND with a refreshing hibiscus water. The resort itself is in, & is arguably the heart of, Playa de los Muertos, aka the Gay beach, walking distance from everything the Zona Romantica has to offer. The rooms are newly renovated and very, very well appointed. My base room had a large bathroom w/ L'Occitane toiletries, full kitchen, sofa, comfortable King bed, and balcony with great views of the beach and bay. The AC could be frigid if desired. The big advantage is access to the Mantamar Beach Club, which is a short walk down a staircase, adjacent to the hotel. Consider the daily cost of access, a towel and a chair - $35 - if you stay elsewhere, when comparing Almar's very competitive rates that include these things, to other hotels. There were only 2 issues w/ my otherwise pleasurable stay. As you may have read elsewhere, the staff and service at Mantamar is not comparable to Almar - it's hit or miss. Finally, at checkout, prior to closing your check they send a team member to check the wet bar. I didn't touch it my entire stay, but they claimed I consumed 2 Jack Daniels and a Sprite. This had the potential to ruin the entire trip, but ultimately they took my word for it and left it off the bill. Despite this, I'll be back

Gorgeous but under construction
This is a gorgeous hotel, but with many issues as it is under construction. Although it is touted as (and you're paying for) a full luxury experience, there are many functional issues which detract from that and they nickle and dime you. I booked in September for a March stay and they screwed up our room. We had to stay in a lower class room the first night and even when moved, they again put us into the wrong room. The water is not ok to drink and you have to ask constantly for single serve plastic water bottles - sometimes they come, sometimes they don't. How awful for the environment and simply not cost effective for them. Dumb. There is noise from the construction starting at 9am..so don't think you're sleeping in after a night of partying. Oddly the luxurious king sized bed had only a night stand on one side. While there were 6 outlets under the nightstand, there was only 1 in the full kitchen, yet oddly a phone outlet beside the toilet. There's a coffee pot,but you're charged for the coffee packets. Our package included access to Mantamar beach club. Pretty...but woah..OVERPRICED drinks. The rooftop patio was supposed to be finished but only had access the our last day - and it was still HEAVILY under construction. Odd choices with layout and amenities up there. Only 6 lounge chairs but loads of dining tables. Hot tubs with scorching hot black marble surrounds, just asking for danger. NOTE: although prepaid through Expedia, you are charged a daily fee of $8US.

Keeps Getting Better
The TOP roof top bar & restaurant and spa/gym are now open, but be advised, that if your room is on the floor, just below, you will have constant noise. This time, I came with my friend who uses a walker, and while PV and the hotel are not ADA compliant, the hotel is decent, and the staff are always ready to help, and Almar now owns a private small van, they use to shuttle guests to the beach. The staff are really amazing. From the crew at Mantamar, at the beach, all the way to the masseurs (I recommend Cesar and Juan) at the tippy top, in the new spa/gym, and everywhere in between. The sales manager, Erika, is very responsive and accommodated our needs and requests swiftly and graciously. NOTE: Both Almar and neighboring buildings are under construction as of this post, but the windows are dual pane, but the is constant drilling noise right now. Also, the beach music starts from 12PM - evening, so there it's not the best place for peace and quiet; it's a perfect place to mix-and-mingle with friendly staff and travelers. NOTE: the hotel charges about 20% to change US dollars to MX pesos, and they DO NOT have an ATM/Cash Machine. Almar, please install an ATM that dispenses both US and MX, and a change machine. This really helps with gratuity/tipping. TIP: Uber is available in PV, if you like nicer cars and more predictable pricing. Keep in mind, though, that when the app tells you "5 Minutes Away", it'll be 8-10 minutes.
