Beautiful property in the heart of a gorgeous area
Kyoto is stunning and staying at a ryokan was a wonderful experience but I wish we had only done one night given the "futon" beds on the floor - even the pillows were incredibly hard on our bodies unfortunately. The staff was lovely and the property is gorgeous. Loved the onsen too! We didn't originally pay for dinner but ended up adding on with other family staying at Gion Hatanaka - keseiki isn't something I'll likely want to try again but both dinner and breakfast were an experience! It's steps away from a park/temple area which we walked through everyday to/from just to enjoy the scenery. If you're staying in Kyoto for more then one night, I'd recommend one night and other nights somewhere a bit more comfortable but that could just be because I'm used to Western comforts/food.

Very traditional
If u want to experience how to live like Japanese for few days this is it for you. The location is great, it’s close to a temple where u can walk around. The hotel is great. We had a room with a garden view with private bath so that’s great. We were offered yukete and some house wear to experience it real Japanese style The staff are very helpful and very polite and prompt. It’s amazing how they can lug the luggage’s through uneven stoned walkway in their kimono’s. We did feel bad for the ladies though as there were no men helping and they have been very helpful despite my husband saying he will do it. The food, not too much selection and I find that the extra $300+ cad we paid for the food for breakfast and dinner were lacking in options. I was still hungry unless u fill yourself with rice in the end. I also realized that I didn’t like the too traditional Japanese food. It’s a good experience though. The room I find a bit cold despite The heater. The wood tub Japanese style was great. The tatami bed was a good experience but having been used to a bed I had a back ache in the morning. Overall for those that wanted the real Japanese style experience this is great but it’s also pricey we paid some $700+ cad per night including breakfast and dinner. If u can and Want to splurge to experience the real Japanese style this is great. One of the best in the area but if u r on a budget I would say a night or two is enough.

Comfortable take on Ryokan experience
Voted top 10 Ryokan in Japan by some, we stayed for 1 night to try. Even though we only got a standard room, it's more spacious than we can imagine. It's like an apartment with everything (minus the kitchen). Your feet would feel great on the tatami's. Very well decorated and calming. Do need some time to get used to the traditional bed experience though. Location is superb, next to one main temple, while just need to walk down the slope to the heart of Gion area. Didn't try the food, maybe next time

Beautiful upscale traditional Japanese inn
Was everything I hoped. Situated in an old charming part of town just a few steps away from a picturesque shrine and next to a tree-lined road. My room was like a traditional Japanese house and all the touches from the tea and sweets to the mimibar and amenities were perfect. They also give you a comfy traditional outfit to wear while you're there, and a yukata to wear at night--so you don't even need to pack too much! The in-room breakfast was quite the experience too. I didn't do in room dinner but instead opted for the dinner and maiko show in the restaurant. Food was good, but the geisha were wonderful and entertaining. The staff was so sweet and called taxis when needed. When I forgot a package in my taxi, I called hotel and they tracked down my driver and had him return to the train station! My one con would be in AC unit was quite weak and it was 90+ degrees outside. I noticed my friends who were staying off a main wing of inn had much stronger AC. There is also a small hot springs bath downstairs for hotel guests. Separate ladies and mens. Overall such a gem and I'd def return and recommend!

Exceptional 10.0
Japanese cultural immersion
For an authentic experience that is different than any stay in a western-style hotel, definitely consider Gion Hatanka ryokan. The staff is exceptional and the experience is unlike any other. Highly recommend the onset/baths too! The location of the ryokan is fantastic and easily walkable to prime Gion area, many temples and shopping. We stayed two nights and the staff member who was assigned to us (served afternoon matcha, dinner, breakfasts) was wonderful. She also set up the beds (futon mattresses) each evening. Some may feel a slight lack of privacy or spontaneity given the structure around the meals, but for two nights, it was totally worth it. I'm not sure I would enjoy a prolonged stay given the structure, but for 2-3 days, I highly recommend the ryokan experience. Why not start with the best and try Gion Hatanka?
