Our first impression of this ryokan was not very good. When we arrived we were told quite curtly that check in time was 3 PM. Of course we were fine with that, but the woman’s manner was not representative of the warm receptions we received in other hotels and ryokans we stayed in throughout our two weeks in Japan, even when we arrived early at our other accommodations. Other than this woman, the staff was wonderful. We had Yuka for the first two nights and another woman for the last night as our servers and both were very lovely. This is a very, very traditional ryokan. You sleep on futons and are served meals on the floor at low tables. As a western traveler, I think it is nice to experience this for a night or two, but not more at this ryokan. The others that we visited were more of a mix of western and Japanese style. You still had a very Japanese experience, but with some added western comforts.

Nice ryokan, but Front desk staff were a little too business-like. We stayed at two small ryokans in the Japan Alps that had much more warm and friendly staff. Gion Hatanaka is expensive, too. I would go for a smaller, less expensive place the next time I’m in Kyoto. That said, our room was huge (though we weren’t allowed to move our suitcases out of one corner of the room), and we had a cedar tub! The kaiseki dinner was very good.

Wonderful ryokan with very traditional feeling but modern utilities. Quiet street but steps away from Yasaka Shrine and easy walk to Gion, Ninezaka and Kiyomizu-dera. Great service especially in room dinners and breakfasts.

Great value, not a fan of the food
Phenomenal value and experience. Significantly exceeded expectations. I don’t think I could do a ryokan for my entire trip but highly recommend for a couple nights. Comes with what seems like a 10 course traditional Japanese meal. I personally, did not enjoy most of the dishes but it was quite the experience

Superb location at heart of Gion, next to shrine. Beautiful ryokan which is in excellent shape with all ryokan amenities. Dinner and breakfast superb. Outreach to guests above and beyond. A memorable ryokan experience. Finally some quiet and break from relentless movement and commercialism of modern Japan. Time travel back to another era. Small negative...AC might have been a bit stronger but we visited in August heat wave so maybe heat was exceptionally bad this year

It is a true ryokan experience. It is very different than a western hotel. The mineral baths are excellent. I’d recommend a fan for the rooms, they were warm in the summer.

Beautiful property in the heart of a gorgeous area
Kyoto is stunning and staying at a ryokan was a wonderful experience but I wish we had only done one night given the "futon" beds on the floor - even the pillows were incredibly hard on our bodies unfortunately. The staff was lovely and the property is gorgeous. Loved the onsen too! We didn't originally pay for dinner but ended up adding on with other family staying at Gion Hatanaka - keseiki isn't something I'll likely want to try again but both dinner and breakfast were an experience! It's steps away from a park/temple area which we walked through everyday to/from just to enjoy the scenery. If you're staying in Kyoto for more then one night, I'd recommend one night and other nights somewhere a bit more comfortable but that could just be because I'm used to Western comforts/food.
