Profile: Higashiyama Ward

Profile: Higashiyama Ward

Quaint Higashiyama lies between the Kamo river and the mountains, just 3 km northeast of downtown Kyoto. Sloping streets are lined with wooden buildings housing independent shops selling artisanal wares, giving the district a cozy, old-world feel. Visit in March to experience the Hanatoro festival, when the flower-decked alleys are lit by thousands of white lanterns.

The vast wooded Kiyomizu-dera temple complex is the best-known attraction in the area, but a stroll through Higashiyama’s picturesque streets will bring you to countless smaller but equally fascinating religious sites, including Kodaiji Temple which boasts pretty landscaped gardens and a bamboo grove.

    Seikora Ryokan in Kyoto

It was one of the most unique experience I’ve had in all my travels. It was like another world. We had dinner & breakfast which were both excellent! The service was wonderful. There was a public bath which was also an enjoyable experience! Overall, it was totally worth the expense

A great experience and VERY attentive staff. Big adjustment from a modern hotel, but a great experience.

The Seikoro Ryokan yields an excellent experience and overnight stay in Kyoto. Located a short walk from the Kiyomizu-Gojo station (and one stop from culturally vibrant Gion) and tucked away on a quiet street, Seikoro is in a prime location. The staff are extremely attentive, respectful, and considerate. Any questions we had regarding our stay or Kyoto were answered in full and with eagerness--there was no hesitation in assisting us in locating and contacting the police station when a personal belonging was lost during the trip. My friends and I took advantage of the (gender separated) traditional wooden bath and Japanese breakfast. My only regret is not staying more than one night in order to take advantage of the dinner and massage amenity. I would highly recommend Seikoro for a very pleasant and cultural experience in Kyoto.

We were vegetarian and do not eat egg. We couldn’t find anything. As the veggies were also cooked in fish oil. According to the price we paid room was real cozy and small for 3 people. Also, the AC was not working all night.

    Hospitality defined!

What an amazing experience. Our stay at Seikoro ryokan immersed us into the heart of Japanese culture. Our kids were very impressed by the many ceremonials around tea, dinner, bath, and the staff was incredibly nice & welcoming. We all slept really well on the mats. Highly recommend this place.

Where to start....I do not really have any benchmark to compare Seikoro against, but for the price, I was quite disappointed overall. We had booked a half-board room for 3 adults for 1 night, which came to almost $1000 in mid-March. While the staff and service were incredible, the property was tired and dirty, and the food, while interesting, poor value. This ryokan markets itself as traditional and homely. And while it is both of those things, the owners have not put any money into the property to keep things in a state justifying the price. We had two sofa-beds in the room which where stained and dirty, and the bathroom sink and fixtures where very out of date and lacked any kind of integration with the rest of the decor. The hand towel in our toilet looked like it was about 2 years past it’s wash cycle life (how expensive is a towel to replace once and a while?!). The kiaseki dinner was artfully presented and interesting, but just nowhere near the quality and taste asked by its price! While very fresh, it also lacked more variety in terms of protein - was all seafood. It would have been nice with a little taste of meat, especially for those in my family who were not big fish fans. On a more positive note, the location is good, breakfast (both Japanese and Western) tasty, new onsen relaxing, and the service impeccable. However, I can’t overlook the former issues mentioned for this cost.

Such an amazing authentic experience! We loved the facility as well as the staff. Quick warning - wi-fi signal was very faint.

attentive staff but overpriced for what you get

The staff at Seikoro Ryokan was wonderful--attentive and helpful--as I would expect from a ryokan. My main complaint is about the general condition of the place and the price. The rooms, especially the bathrooms, were worn out and musty. The towel were old and worn, there was aftershave, moisturizer, etc. in scuffed up bottles that looked they were about 30 years old. The heating was very difficult to control, making the rooms overheated. This was especially problematic as the only bedding option was very heavy quilts. The futons were not real futons but rather folded up foam mats that like one would used for budget camping in the 70s. All of this would have been fine (and I certain expect the ryokan experience to be different from an ordinary hotel), had the room not cost 3x as much as the wonderful and Hotel Kanra that we also stayed at in Kyoto. It also offered traditional Japanese furniture, tatami, etc. but was wonderfully clean and up-to-date in every way (and the staff there was very helpful and attentive as well)--at about 1/3 the price.
