Very Good8.0
Well decorated and located. Clean and functional
New hotel. It's clean and provides all the amenities you'd expect from a hotel. Rooms are smaller than US hotel rooms, but is expected in Japan. We had room for each our rollie bags to be open on floor and our beds. Not much more room than that. It's efficient and you aren't going to be in your room most of the time anyway. Comes with it's own bathroom, a tub/shower and a mini fridge and hot water kettle.

Kyoto Granbell Hotel, Kyoto
21st century hotel in a historical district
A sleek new hotel (they opened in July this year) in the historical Gion district, mixing smartly old and cutting-edge elements in its design. An understated entrance from the street brings you into a 'different world'. A beautifully decorated lobby/lounge, breakfast room with free coffee machine, newspapers and bar. A lovely gender-separated 'public bath' in the basement (no swimsuit required). We stayed in a king-size bed room, the bed took the full width of the room under the window (good shades and night blinds). There was a 2-seat setee and a coffee table (which got in the way) plus a smartly lit shelving for tea kettle and toiletries plus wash basin, and the usual few hangers on the wall in lieu of wardrobe. A small bathroom with heated toilet seat and a glass shower cubicle. All amenities (A/C, safety box, hair dryer, a beautiful night gown that they unfortunately refused to sell to us). An extremely helpful staff (they would even venture out on the street in the rain to catch you a taxi so you do not have to wait too long when ordering on the phone). A great central location, less than 5 min from Gion main street of the historical Gion, 5 min walk in the opposite direction to subway station and the river. A short taxi ride to train station (which is amazing). PROBLEM: The booking website does not include the hotel name and address in Japanese, nor the hotel phone number (only some central number), taxi drivers cannot find it - have it translated before coming!

Great little hotel in a convenient location.
The hotel is very convenient, and the service was spectacular. The breakfast buffet is as good as any we've had anywhere in Japan. The furnishings are stylish and useful, and everything clean & in good order. I had a problem with the small size of the room - but this is not that unusual in Japan. Please note that a regular room is sometimes just the size of the bed & no wider - so literally no room on either side, the bed is up against the wall (or the window) on 3 sides. However, it's a REALLY comfortable bed, so it's not so bad. I had a personal issue & the staff was so great & went out of their way to be of service, both politely and quickly. Though it's well-situated, the Gion district has become overwhelmingly touristy lately, so the streets are crowded & even taking a nice walk is taxing on your patience.

Highly Recommend!
I believe this hotel just opened this summer. Spotless and beautifully decorated. Perfect location on a quiet street and walking distance to train station and Gion. Rooms were a decent size with a thoughtful layout. Friendly staff. Public bath was a nice bonus! I was not sure what to expect as It was my first time in a public bath. It was clean, relaxing, dimmed lighting with serene music playing. Highly recommend this hotel!

great location
centrally located in the gion district. $10-$12 cab ride from kyoto station. only complaint was that the room was a little on the small side. our king size bed room also did not have a tub so if you need one, best to confirm.
