The room had a very bad smell inside and we had to change our room, even we changed our room the bathroom still had a bad odor. Very convenient location but I would not stay in this hotel again.

    Peaceful, friendly jewel
A peaceful jewel of a hotel very near the Yasaka shrine and Kennen-ji temple and easy walking distance to the Keihan subway and the more modern side of Kyoto. While the street in front of the hotel was narrow and well traveled, the ambience at the Kyoto Granbell was soothing, and the interior was very attractive with a great mix of Eastern and Western aesthetic. Our double room was Japan-sized (pretty small) but completely clean with a small refrigerator and a reasonably-sized bathroom. The lobby was wonderful - roomy with large and small tables and chairs for reading or working - and the staff was efficient, friendly, helpful and spoke great English. They were very helpful with offering directions and giving out little tidbits of advice about the surrounding area and some local restaurants. The ice machine and microwave were always available as was the coffee and tea machine. (The machine ground beans for each cup.) We enjoyed the extensive, delicious breakfast buffet with both Japanese and Western options, the bar open in the evenings, as well as the lovely public bath in the basement.

Large beds but slightly slanted. Very tiny rooms. Excellent location. Lovely onsen with nice laundry room too.

The Granbell is an excellent hotel with particularly helpful and knowledgeable staff. It’s in a great location and the breakfasts are very good. The rooms are small at least by American standards but are still totally functional. Not capsules. Highly recommended.
