Most popular areas in Vienna for 4-star hotels

Whether they come to wander the parks in summer, or experience the frosty splendor and old-fashioned markets of the festive season, visitors flock to Vienna all year round. So it’s no wonder there are so many hotels, with 4-star pads scattered throughout the handsome Innerestadt core, with many within moments of Stephansplatz. If you fancy staying somewhere just outside of the bustle of the city center, there are also 4-star hotels to be found in areas like Mariahilf and Leopoldstadt.

Top 4-star hotels in Vienna

The 25Hours Hotel at MuseumsQuartier isn’t just a place to stay – it’s an experience. This quirky boutique hotel has decor inspired by the theater and the circus, with retro bric-a-brac adorning the walls, and hip, vintage furnishings aplenty. The rooftop bar is rather good, too. Then there’s InterCityHotel Wien, which sits in a major shopping area and has smart guestrooms and a cozy cocktail bar to relax in after a hard day’s sightseeing. Fleming’s Hotel Wien-Westbahnhof features chic accommodation and a bar with an extensive and decadent wine list.

Where to find the best restaurants in Vienna

You can’t come to Vienna and not try the Wiener schnitzel – that deliciously gnarled and golden veal dish which is served up in sleek, fine dining restaurants and homely family-run eateries alike. The Innerestadt is where most of the best restaurants are, serving classic dishes like schnitzel and boiled beef Tafelspitz. The grand cafés of the Innerestadt, long a haunt of thinkers, artists, and people-watchers, are another must. Loosen the belt, because you’ll want to try the delicate pastries and rich, dark Sachertorte.

The most popular things to do in Vienna

Top of any must-see list when in Vienna is the Hofburg Palace. Once a European powerhouse, and home to the Habsburg dynasty, this is almost a world within itself. Adorned with architecture from across different eras, it features the perfectly preserved quarters of figures like Emperor Franz Joseph, and you can inspect the clothing and ornaments used by the royals of times gone by. Equally significant is St Stephen’s Cathedral, a towering 12th-century masterpiece of gothic architecture, its unique roof covered with zig-zagging patterned tiles, and its interior aglow with Baroque altarpieces and Byzantine icons. Then there’s the Belvedere, a Baroque complex of palaces which hosts works by giants of art including Monet and van Gogh. It’s also home to Klimt’s golden vision of eroticism, The Kiss, one of the most recognizable images ever painted.

Best ways to get around Vienna

Even if you’re in Vienna on a flying visit, you can pack a lot in. That’s because you can walk to many of the major attractions within the core of the city, but it’s also down to the reliable public transport network. You can hop on a bus or tram to get from A to B, which has the advantage of letting you take in the Neo-Classical landmarks which make Vienna what it is. Alternatively, you can descend to the sleek and efficient underground, where the next train’s never more than a few minutes away.
