What you should know about Donaustadt

Separated by the mighty Danube from the rest of Vienna, Donaustadt manages a few superlatives of its own; it has the highest building, longest lake, and biggest wildlife park in the city. With its mix of gleaming new office towers, open meadows, and forests, this large district feels very different to historic Vienna. But just like the Viennese, you're sure to enjoy walking its nature trails, swimming, and sailing its waters, and occasionally kicking loose at its summer rock and pop festivals.

Hotels in Donaustadt

Away from the guest houses and B&Bs of its suburbs, the best luxury accommodation in Donaustadt is found in the Kaisermuehlen area across from Leopoldstadt. This major business and conference district hosts top-quality business hotels like the 5-star Melia Vienna. With its striking glass-fronted tower, this contemporary hotel impresses with spa and fitness services, 2 restaurants, and a business center. The nearby ARCOHOTEL Kaisserwasser Vienna is close to the VIC conference center and is well regarded for its location, health club, and efficient service. The Park Inn by Radisson Uno City Vienna has received very good Donaustadt hotel reviews, providing quality 4-star service at reasonable rates.

Things to see in Donaustadt

The conferencing facilities of the Kaisermuehlen aren't the only highlight in Donaustadt. It also has the 800-foot-high Donauturm. Built in the 1960s, this observation tower lets you see across the whole of Vienna. It also plays hosts to 2 slowly revolving restaurants. The long curve of the Alte Donau is unmissable from up there, a lake with wonderful water quality that makes it perfect for outdoors activities like swimming, sailing, and fishing. A somewhat wilder experience can be had at the Donau-Auen National Park, a strip of woods, lakes, and meadows running along the Danube. Here you take a stroll far from Vienna's crowds with the chance of spotting kingfishers, newts, beavers, and perhaps even sea eagles. There's history too in Donaustadt, with a memorial to a major Napoleonic battle that took place on the Danube's banks. The Museum Aspern-Essling explores the fascinating story of one of Napoleon's first defeats.

Good for business travelers

Much of Donaustadt's recent growth has been based around the business and conferencing hub of the Vienna International Center (VIC). That makes a hotel in Donaustadt perfect for those coming here for business or to attend one of the VIC's many conferences. But Donaustadt accommodation also makes sense for those keen to sample the best of Vienna while having a little less exposure to its crowds. The historic Innere Stadt is well-connected to Donaustadt, but you can also take days off to explore the pretty Danube valley, or the nearby Alpine foothills.

How to get to Donaustadt

Although Donaustadt lies a little way out of central Vienna, it has good links back to Vienna's International Airport. The S-Bahn S7 is the best way to travel to Donaustadt from there, taking you to Wien Praterstern station in 30 minutes. You can then catch the U1 metro line to get you to the Kaisermuehlen-VIC stop. Most of the hotels in Donaustadt are a short walk or taxi ride from here. Alternately, a hire car is an option if you're looking to explore the wider Vienna region, as most hotels have parking.
