McMenamins mostly converts interesting historic buildings to attractive lodging, dining and entertainment venues. The Crystal Hotel is inexpensive, quiet except on south side garbage mornings, and close to downtown and Pearl district. We have stayed in this hotel twice: the rooms were small, toilet and shower are shared close by down the hall. The young staff is very helpful and gives good advice about enjoying Portland. Parking in a city parking lot is two blocks away and was $18 for 24 hours. Most hotels nearby are $200 and up, so we will be back.

Very Good 8.0
Not bad.
Bed was comfortable. No TV or bathroom but j was stationed close to the private bathroom. Four per floor. So don't worry. Rooms were cool. A creepy vibe to it sort of which I like. Area was great. It's close to everything downtown. Everything was walkable. Very cute place. Salt water soaking pool was amazing. I should have used it more. I would for sure go back! Only thing was they charge you 50 bux per night up front as like a security deposit which they do not tell you. I only came with a certain amount of cash on my debit card. A little more than the price the quoted me and then cash. I stayed 4 nights so it was 200 dollars more than the quote. I was not prepared and my card was declined. I had to use my AMEX. Honestly 50 a night is insane because it is one small room with no bathroom or TV. What would I break? I have heard of 50 or 100 for the whole stay but that is ridiculous. I actually personally saw another guest get declined as well whilst getting ice and so it must be common. It's a bit outrageous and unfair. People are traveling and should not have their travel money tied up in these "what if " security deposits. So yeah. Other than that it was good. In general this hotel is expensive. You get like no meal comped or anything like that and for the should get like a drink or like one breakfast ticket or something. You really just get the room (with no bathroom or TV and a lovely deposit/security fee). I get it. Location is everything. But come on.

Poor 2.0
Maybe for some, but not for me!
No TV in the room. I was sick. WIFI didn’t work either. I kept calling. They would reboot or make excuses about reception and the brick walls. So, no TV and no WiFi to stream any stupid thing while I rested in room. The heating unit was loud and hard to program. The room was so dark, even with all the lights on I could hardly see. Navy blue walls.

Good 6.0
Be prepared for parking/food problems...
Room was fine, as many have noted the bathrooms aren’t in your room but there was never a line and they were quite nice. There isn’t any parking so you have to find street parking where you won’t be ticketed, or take a cab/Uber, etc. Because parking was such an issue we decided to eat in the hotel. We went to the restaurant before the soaking pools to plan our evening, they mentioned that at 10 they changed menus and showed us the late menu, which looked fine to us. We soaked in the pool, which is highly recommended. Upon returning to the restaurant at 10:45 we were told that they weren’t serving because they closed at 11. I wish they’d told us that when we checked in the first time, we would have eaten there and then. The bar was open and had the same late night menu but the music was obnoxiously loud and I would’ve preferred eating in the restaurant as we had planned. The problem was that they were out of almost everything on the (already limited) menu... no chicken wings, no burgers, actually no protein at all on the menu. I asked if they could make an exception and cook a piece of beef/chicken/fish/pork/etc from the regular menu since they were out of everything else. No. They could only put bacon on their falafel burger. I tried it and couldn’t eat it, too dry, and they were kind enough not to charge me. The Cesar salad was good. The truffle fries weren’t hot or crispy, seemed a bit stale. Ended up ordering a pizza down the street and walking to pick it up.

Exceptional 10.0
Fun Clean Well Maintained Hotel. Shared Baths.
Stayed here several times, the most recent being twice on a four state trip. One of my favorite places. Very clean, very well maintained, very well thought out and executed. Very McMenamins. Close to and even in the center of most everything Portland. Not suburban quiet but a lot quieter than I would expect. The rooms are small and have no TVs, or mini fridges. Bathrooms are generally across the hall or down a door or two, but several per floor. First rate selection of mini-soaps and shampoos. A quart mason jar with a certificate for free beer in it, downstairs at the bar. Two bars and a good restaurant downstairs but the area is loaded with bars, coffee houses and cafes---downtown and in the Pearl. Walking: Ten minutes to Downtown/Pioneer Square and Max/Portland Streetcars. Twenty to Union Station. About that to Chinese Garden (as opposed to Japanese version up the hill). NW Portland with even more restaurants about twenty minute walk as well and buses are everywhere. I like the place but you have to know what you're getting. If all you want is white corporate walls and a huge banal space with a flat screen tv with a mini bar, you might want to consider something else.
