A okay stay
Hotel upgraded us to a suite but the suite looked liked it hasn’t been refurbished for years.. TV in the bedroom didn’t work and the furniture inside the living room since quite old and worn out .

Classy and caring
Very classy, old school hotel right in downtown! John at the service desk was super nice and very helpful, even brought up the ironing board for us! Would definitely stay again!

Good for a business trip.
The staff was extremely friendly and hospitable. The hotel itself is very clean and nicely decorated. Only complaint is that although the a/c was working it did not cool off the room very well and it was stuffy. Other than that a one night stay was not bad.

I always choose to stay at the Sophia when i am in San Diego. Staff is friendly, rooms are clean and comfortable, and the attached restaurant is very good.

Poor 2.0
Bug and filth infested
I have stayed in hotels in 3rd world countries that have been cleaner that The Sofia was. The only reason I chose this place is because ~6 years ago or a bit longer it was a so-so boutique hotel. Clearly they have gone down hill rapidly. I was very nervous sleeping in the bed and the morning after my nerves proved for a good reason (see photo). This FAKE Eyelash was found in my bed leaving me to believe the linens haven't been changed for who knows how long. The floor they put us on was filthy and under construction. the size of the room was hardly functional and the toilet was so low to the ground my elderly mother fell multiple times just to sit on the pot!

I like the location, staff, very clean but the internet service is really bad.

Low to mediocre
Small interior room. Window few feet from next wall and window. Had to leave AC off at night, too loud. Carpet old looks dirty.

No door 🚪
Loved the room we had the king suite but ..... No door for any privacy and the bath door was not very good... always getting stuck. Other than that we had a great stay there

Fair 4.0
Expensive and poor customer service
It wasn’t that great for the price. The valet was expensive. Our suite was one big room with a bathroom separating the bedroom from the living area. There was literally no privacy or barrier for the bedroom. Our actual room door didn’t fully close without applying force. More than once we realized the door wasn’t fully shut. The next morning our room key card was deactivated hours before checkout and instead of anyone coming to help, we had to go down to the lobby (from the 7th floor) to show ID and have it reactivated. The elevators are tiny and sound like they’re ready to break. Service was nonexistent and we felt incredibly unwelcome.

Romantic weekend
Check in was quick and easy with polite staff. We came for Valentines weekend and the hotel did not disappoint. The room was clean and comfortable. We did not dine there but, we did bring wine and some appetizers. The room had wine glasses, a fridge , and a microwave oven. There was also wine for purchase in the room. The location was perfect for us. Walking distance to both Gaslamp and Little Italy. We did both the restaurants are awesome.
