Secaucus Hotels

Located in New Jersey, Secaucus certainly has a distinctive name. It actually derives from a Native American phrase meaning "place of snakes", but don't worry – the town is far from fearsome. Just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, Secaucus isn't really a destination town in its own right, but it's a superb base for exploring the Big Apple, and getting to a few prominent places in New Jersey too. That said, the town is a shopper's paradise thanks to the sheer number of mammoth retail outlets in the area.

Things to see

You could say that the biggest attraction near Secaucus is New York City itself. The sprawling metropolis just minutes away by car, so you'll be wandering the oasis of Central Park and checking out the iconic skyscrapers of Manhattan before you know it. Secaucus is a particularly good base if you're attending an event at the huge glass fortress that is Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Also close by is the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, whose central exhibit is the giant warship the Intrepid, which survived kamikaze attacks in World War Two. You get up close to the aircraft on its flight deck, see the crew's quarters, and – in a fascinating section of the museum – even see the prototype Nasa space shuttle, the Enterprise. Staying in Secaucus also makes it easy to see a game at the MetLife Stadium, which hosted the Super Bowl and is home to both the New York Giants and New York Jets. Even if you've never been to a football game before, the atmosphere will electrify.

Hotels in Secaucus

As the town isn't really a tourist destination in its own right, it won't come as much of a surprise to learn that hotels in Secaucus are more functional than flamboyant. Luxury pads won't be found here (you'll have to go into New York City itself for those), but all the major chains are represented throughout the area, offering the sort of reliable comforts and conveniences you'd expect. Some have more amenities than others, so have a good look around if you're after fitness centres and saunas as well as standard guestroom mod-cons like air conditioning and WiFi access.

Where to stay

The hotels in Secaucus are scattered throughout the whole town, so you're really spoiled for choice when it comes to precisely where you want to stay. If you're making the town your base for a holiday in New York City, then you'll naturally want to stay somewhere close to the Hudson River side. Wherever you decide to bed down, though, you should be close to one of the big malls and discounted factory outlets that the town is famous for. Prepare to bag many a bargain during your stay, if you do decide to go exploring.

How to get to Secaucus

There are superb road and rail connections to New York City and the rest of New Jersey, so getting to and from Secaucus is a doddle. As for arriving in the area to begin with, you'll likely be touching down at either Newark Liberty International Airport or John F. Kennedy International Airport, both of which handle flights from a huge array of major cities across the world.
