We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff was wonderful! Heads up: the beach had a lot of sea urchins in January. There were some local youths that showed us safe passage and starfish, sea spiders, lionfish, etc. right there on our beach for a small fee. For swimming the hotel pool was beautiful. The food in the hotel restaurant was reasonably priced and good.

At the tail end of a long trip to East Africa, the Zanzabar Retreat hotel was a GIFT: exceptional hospitality from the owners, Jan and Salome, and from the excellent and thoughtful team… Naima, Lusekelo, Newton, Aisha and Bwite. Great food and many thoughtful touches. Very charming setting and convenient to diving snorkeling and dining options along a magnificent beach.

Quite far to get to from Stonetown but a stunning location. It’s boutique hotel so not the facilities of a mega resort but the local friendly staff arranged a couple of excellent things for me and I really enjoyed the intimate atmosphere. Great food too with sea views. I also enjoyed a massaged in a small hut by the sea so could hear the surf.

The Zanzibar Retreat is a lovely beach front oasis, with beautiful gardens, swimming pool, and miles of gorgeous white sand beach to walk. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and quiet. There are plenty of chairs, either on the beach or by the pool, and little nooks to sit with a drink or read a book. It was the perfect place to relax after 14 days on safari. The owners are always on site interacting with guests and the food was delicious. The shrimp mango salad was a favourite.

A fantastic little gem!

We had booked this little hotel for six nights, but as soon as we stepped into the veranda/bar/restaurant we felt that we could stay forever...so booked another six nights directly, without even seeing our room. But we did not regret it!. This is a a hotel with all small details that makes you feel at home; for example a beach basket with towels and sun hats in every room. And as a Swedish person I loved the 'fika' every afternoon at 4 o'clock :-) Finally - the food...was delicious! I don't remember how many times I had the mango/avocado/shrimp salad or the tuna steak. If you are out for a cosy small hotel (only 14 rooms I think), on a fantastic beach, just book!

The location of Zoi Retreat Hotel is great, and the manager truly made a difference during my stay — he is incredibly kind, polite, and goes above and beyond to make guests feel at home. He really does everything he can for the customers. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience fdidn’t match his effort. The hotel is not well-maintained, cleanliness was poor (even after a deep clean, there were spider webs), and the food and drinks are overpriced for what you get.If the hotel matched the manager’s level of care, it would be amazing — but for now, I can only give it 2 stars.

This was my first hotel in Zanzibar and I would return in heartbeat to stay longer. The aesthetic was relaxing, the owners were present and enjoyable to visit with. The food was DELICIOUS!! It was quiet, peaceful, and comfortable. The waters are somewhat shallow on the beach in the morning and then rise as the day continues. Be sure and wear water sandals or footwear with a hard sole. There are many prickly urchins around. There are also spots where there are not and it makes for a great area to swim and cool off. The sands are clean and WHITE! I loved it here and I know you will, too!

Mysigt litet hotell direkt på stranden

Fantastiskt mysigt litet hotell mitt på den vackra långa vita stranden i Matemwe. Smakfullt inredda rum, mysigt i restaurang och lounge, lugn och skön miljö. Jättetrevlig personal och ägare gör stämningen inbjudande och familjär. Supergod mat och frukost. God fika Kl 16 varje dag är en så trevlig sak som gästerna bjuds på varje dag. På rummen finns även en fin sarong, strandhandduk, solhatt och strandväska att låna medan man är där. En riktig oas att längta tillbaka till!
