6/10 Good

Oldschool hostel, good atmosphere, so-so amenities
The hostel is a cool place, very nice owner and staff/volunteers running it. The resident cat is also a cutie and super chill. Check-in and check-out were very smooth. Everything is kept very clean. I chose it because it advertises itself as not being a party hostel, which I value because I wanted to rest well. Unfortunately, many guests were not very respecting of others and made lots of noise and chaos in the middle of the night. The beds aren't so comfortable, you can really feel the springs, and they make a lot of noise. There are only three bathrooms (each with one toilet and one shower) for 26 guests, which often leads to long waits. One of the showers was also not working when I was there, worsening the issue. Power sockets in the rooms are another issue. There isn't one by each bed like in more modern hostels, but rather just one power bar for the entire room, which might be on the other side of the room from your bed, meaning that your alarm wakes everyone else up in the morning until you can manage to turn it off...not ideal. Overall, however, it seems like one of the better options, especially if you're not interested in party hostels, so I would recommend it with a caution to backpackers. Finally, with respect to other reviews that complain about the uphill walk to access the hostel: this is really not an issue! It takes 15 minutes to walk from Balluta Bay with an ascent of only 60 metres. Some steep bits but generally very pleasant.
