Highly recommend this place
This Ryokan could not be in a better location, the staff were super helpful. The japanese breakfast is served on tatami floors in a communal area downstairs and is very delicious. The public bath is basic, but for those who enjoy japanese bathing, it is a treat to have. This is a great budget option for the real japanese Ryokan experience.

Great location
Great location, very friendly and helpful staff. Walking Kyoto from the hotel was a wonderful experience. Comfortable sleep after doubling the futons. Wish the bath house had longer hours.

Clean and friendly ryokan
We really enjoyed our two-night stay at this hotel. It is in a great neighborhood (north Higashiyama? maybe the edge of Gion but definitely more residential than the entertainment district), walking distance of Kiyomizudera temple, and in a very old historic part of town, giving you a wonderful feeling of old Kyoto. All around there are great restaurants and shops, and the hotel staff can give you recommendations. We were in a fairly large room; they put out the mats around 5pm, and take them away as soon as you leave your room for breakfast in the dining room. The breakfast is included with the stay, but you need to let them know about it by the afternoon of the previous day. It was not a super high-end ryokan, but I think those are even more expensive than this one is. We really enjoyed the onsen. Mostly families staying here, mostly Japanese, maybe two parties of Koreans, and us. Nearby is the Camellia Tea Ceremony; they partner with a kimono shop where you can rent kimonos, and have your photo taken. We all found the futons very comfortable to sleep on, with very cozy and clean bedding. We would stay here again.

Authentic and located in the heart of Gion. The onsen was a wonderful experience and the room made us feel like we were truly in Japan. Only issue was comfort, in that the bedding was thin.

A unique experience, good for a night
If you want to experience what a ryokan is like, but don't want to drop close to $1k per night on the high end ones, this is more of a budget option. I'm glad I went. Enjoyed the public bath and seeing shrines in this quiet neighborhood. It was my first Japanese bed experience (mat on the floor) and I must admit that a fairly bright room overnight + hip pain meant I didn't sleep very well. FYI: 7pm was too late to request breakfast for the next day; check out is at 10 am.
