A mini-break in Berlin
Highly Recommend the Steigenberger This was our fourth visit to Berlin in the last several years, and our second time staying at the Steigenberger. One could not ask for a better location! Bus 109 from the Tegel airport, get off at the Kurfurstendamm bus stop, and the hotel is a three minute walk around the corner. Very quiet and comfortable, with a very friendly and attentive staff. There are many restaurants on the same street as the hotel, and a Starbucks around the corner. There's also a huge Karstadt department store right across the road. As well, the hotel provides you with a Berlin public transit pass for free. This card costs €36.50/pp for 7 days. In our case (2 people) this would have been €73 added on to the cost of our visit - about $110 Canadian dollars. The transit card is good on all buses, trains, S-Bahn and U-Bahn systems. The hotel is very conveniently located, a five minute walk to the Zoo Station, from which you can connect to anything to get around Berlin. The hotel has a nice little outdoor seating area serving the wonderful "Berliner Kindl" beer. In short, we've become very well acquainted with Berlin in the last few years and now will think of staying nowhere else but Hotel Steigenberger.

Poor 2.0
awful not stay here.unjustified price.
Disappoiment, awful, outrageous, poor, unpleasant, uncomfortable, desgusting.unprofessional, beneath contempt… First night-we did not sleep at all because of the noise of air conditionned. I reported in the morning-during the day they could not fix the dammage,at my return they just announced me that they tried.what about my sleep?they have no available rooms.! Nobody thought to keep a room.Nobody contacted me -may be I would change the hotel. Next day the room hasn't been cleaned at all. This time a change was proposed but because because it rained,I prefered to keep the old room instead of packing and moving.Wrong! There were no mosquito nets... Last day I arranged for a late check out-at 5:30pm We spent the morning in town, returned, started to pack and left the room for half hour. I hung the "do not disturb" sign on the door. When we returned keys have been annulated.Later we found that all the suitcases that we left open on the beds were moved. Everything was touched and moved! Our unpacked clothes were on side in a pile of mixed clothes. I prepared clean clothes on a shelf of the wardrobe to to put on after the shower. The wardrobe was empty and I barely found my underwear into the pile and wasted precious time to find each piece. How disgusting to put on intimate clothes after someone touched them!. Such a lack of respect! I felt like to be thrown out. We leaved very furious and deeply offended.

Didn't honour special food requirements
My Daughter is type 1 diabetic, vegan and coeliac (a small crumb of gluten is dangerous to her health) After several emails from the hotel guaranteeing, in their words, that their chef would "prepare food to her gastronomic requirements" We booked for 6 nights in the central Berlin Steigenberger hotel, to include breakfast, on the strength of this guarantee, at a cost for four of us of £1500. At breakfast, no provision had been made and there was nothing she could eat. Complaining to the head of catering, she told us that the person who gave the guarantees was wrong and had not informed catering management. Several meetings days later, still no provision of suitable food at breakfast, even though we had already paid 20 Euros per day each for a breakfast. They finally told us that they would try and buy some tofu and gluten free bread but we would be charged for it!!! On the final day, my daughter had some suitable food to eat at breakfast, all too late. Earlier, we were forced to go to a special organic food shop to purchase the breakfast foods that my daughter could eat safely, costing us £80.00. We left the non perishable items of this food, in the large shop plastic bag in the room and cleaning staff took it away, probably about £30 worth. It was vital to treat a sudden diabetic hypo attack!!! In the expensive hotel Piano bar we waited over 1/2 hr for our drinks order and left when the waitress made excuses that only one bar tender was on duty. Not good enough!!!

Reception with Attitude
Hotels may have star ratings but their real measure lies with how they make their guests feel. In my case I felt frustration, disappointment and embarrassment. Despite arriving after the 15:00 hours check in time in sweltering heat, I still had to wait an hour before my room was ready. During this wait I was given a voucher allowing me a free cocktail in the only bar open at that time. There may be some `history` between the reception and the bar as this voucher was rejected when I handed it to the bar staff and instantly returned to me- complete with reasons in perfect English on why they would not accept it. This refusal certainly frustrated and embarrassed the reception staff. The problem was, however, that it also frustrated and embarrassed me. On the fourth day of my stay I had to witness a stressed conversation between a room cleaner and one of the supervisory hotel staff. Witnessing unhappy staff is one thing, being caught in their cross-fire is another. A misguided school of Thought believes that excellence lies in having a Bell Captain, a separate desk for booking theatre tickets and Reception with Attitude. I disagree. Being made to feel welcome is the first and only sign of excellence. My reception at this hotel made me feel distinctly second class and totally coloured my opinions for the rest of my stay

Location, Location, Location!
Just book this hotel, it is the best! Having stayed in the Steigenberger in Austria, we had no hesitation booking The Steigenberger Berlin. You could not get closer to the centre of this city. Go out the door turn left or right, 100 meters and you reach the tour buses, shops and I mean more shops than you can dream of. The church and market areas. From here you can eat, shop, drink, party, travel, catch a bus, train or metro....The largest KaDeWe is a short walk away, you could get lost in the 60,000 sq feet of retail! The 100 & 200 buses take you to the museum quarter . I am wheelchair disabled so I am going to add some advice for travellers. The hotel was completely accessible and does have some adapted rooms with wet room and seat and toilet bars, lifts. Breakfast was great as they sat me close to the buffet, which is a delight to be seen, great choices, especially if you fancy a glass of champagne for breakfast! It does cost 25 Euro each, so many nearby cafes, if you decide to eat out. There are several mini markets, the nearest out the front, turn left, walk past the park on right and turn left, short walk. Pavements were good but crossing sometimes had large concrete lips and I often need help getting over the bumps! We were told buses were wheelchair accessible, but not all have a ramp, some only lower the floor, but still a gap, so some mobility would help. Most large stores had great accessibility, but the smaller more expensive designers had a front step!
