What you should know about Enge

Curving around the shores of the northwestern tip of Lake Zurich and neighboring the historic Old Town to the east, the district of Enge offers a great location from which to enjoy the city of Zurich. With high-quality hotels and apartments close to local parks and fantastic lakeside facilities, it is a relaxed neighborhood. However, the culture and attractions of Zurich are not far away, thanks to the excellent transportation links into the bustling city center.

Hotels in Enge

This upscale district offers high-quality hotels in Enge, most of which come with a 4-star rating. Hotel Enigmatt is something of a hidden treasure; set back in a quiet location, this modern 4-star Enge hotel has its own high-end restaurant overlooking an intimate garden terrace—it is an oasis of calm in the city. In a livelier location, the Hotel Ascot is situated opposite Enge train station just across the main square. As well as four stars, it boasts two restaurants, a 24-hour front desk, and a business center. If you are looking for family-friendly accommodation in Enge, the Seestrasse and Jenatsch apartments offer extra space and flexibility for trips with children.

Things to do in Enge

Bordering Zurich Old Town and its abundance of attractions to the east, Enge still has plenty of its own to offer. Enjoy Lake Zurich all year round at its lakeside facilities, which are less crowded in summer than the eastern “Gold Coast.” Mythenquai is a sandy beach that is great for families, providing games, barbeques, and shallow bathing for non-swimmers. Seebad has similar daytime facilities before transforming into a cozy lakeside bar in the evening—and when winter sets in, head indoors for a sauna and massage. Once refreshed and relaxed, head inland to a real gem of Zurich: Museum Rietberg. Switzerland’s only museum of non-European art, it houses the stunning collection of Baron Eduard von der Heydt with artifacts from America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. A free attraction with rave reviews is the Succulent Plant Collection Zurich, which houses one of Europe’s largest displays of cacti and dry-climate plants.

Good for families

If you are on a family vacation to Zurich, Enge’s lakeside facilities are perfect for children and designed with families in mind. The popular city center is just a few minutes away by tram, train, or bus, so once you have explored Zurich’s top tourist attractions, Enge will give you space for fun and relaxation. The huge new multiplex of Sihlcity is also nearby in the neighboring district of Wiedikon, which along with the gleaming shopping mall and cinema offers the Minicity “Kinderparadies” (Children’s Paradise) for a host of daytime activities within easy reach of your Enge hotel.

How to get to Enge

Enge is in a great location with a direct train to Zurich Airport every half an hour, taking just 18 minutes. Zurich Hauptbahnhof (mainline station) is also just six minutes away by train. Zurich Hauptbahnhof is a major train terminal with direct routes not only to all main Swiss cities, but also to destinations across the continent, making it perfect for travelers taking a tour of Europe. Trams 6, 7, and 13 take you directly to Hauptbahnhof from Enge, while tram 5 takes you into the Old Town. The wealth of public transportation options mean you won’t need a car to travel in Enge.
