Two nights in Sydney.
The hotel is in a great location. Close to the cruise ship terminal and Circular Quay. The rooms could be updated. I was worried the shared bathrooms would be a problem, but it was not. Our room faced George Street and there some road noise. There was a good, basic breakfast in the morning. The staff was friendly and helpful. I would stay here again.

Travel on a budget
Female traveling solo on a budget- Booked Mercantile for 5 nights and overall had a fine time. Pros: Affordable old building with character, AMAZING area about 5-10 minute walk from Circular Quay, surrounded by cute shops, restaurants, not far from pharmacy, etc. When someone was available to help they were very nice. The bathrooms for many of the rooms are shared, but there are 4 bathrooms to about 5-6 rooms and I never had to fight for one or wait on anyone. They were kept clean and were sufficient. Cons: I was put in a room with an adjoining room. Both the main door and the adjoining door had frosted glass above them which allowed light in all night. One night the adjoining room kept their light on the whole time. This can be solved with a sleep mask, but it was annoying. The room I had was also right above the street which was very noisy. The noise was unreal on nights with live music and even caused the bed to vibrate. Again, this can be somewhat helped with ear plugs but if this bugs you, I wouldn't recommend it. I think the main thing I didn't like is that there was not someone for me to ask questions of without feeling like I was bugging someone who worked in the pub below. There was rarely to never anyone in the hotel "office" so don't count on any kind of concierge service or even help for items at night or during off hours. I'm not even sure if someone was working there anywhere at night so you are on your own.

If you like pub, this is a good choice.
Not very convenient to check in and check out because they are busy in their pub. If there is no people in reception, try to ask help from pub, they will find a person to help your check in. A bit noisy until night. But they are hospitality and kindness to help you. If you like pub and make new friend there, it might a good choice! They have good live band.

Older but great location and comfy bed
Loved having continental brekky on weekdays and full breakfast on weekends. Very clean but old building. The shade in my room was mostly closed but wouldn’t open or close. Fixed promptly. The shower head in bath in middle on second floor shoots water over the shower door. Owners are very helpful and attentive.
