Only about 20 minutes by train into the city you still have the chance to absorb the classic tourist attractions of Zurich for the day. But Winterthur’s location outside of the urban hub has a lot to offer families who love a small town feel with easy access to outdoor activities, as well as the wealth of family friendly festivals and events held here throughout the year.

How to get to Winterthur

Winterthur is one of Switzerland’s busiest train stations and has direct routes into Germany and Italy. There are around 8 direct trains between Zurich central station (Hauptbahnhof) and Winterthur every hour. From Zurich Airport, there are five direct trains an hour (including the regional S16 line) which travel directly to Winterthur within 15 minutes. Take care when arriving at the airport not to follow the flood of travelers taking the S16 into Zurich city center – Winterthur is in the opposite direction. Winterthur is well connected by road through the A1 Highway coming from Geneva and continuing to the Swiss – Austrian border at St Margrethen. The A1 will also take you into the center of Zurich in around 25 minutes, but as with any large city, plan ahead allowing for heavy commuter traffic at certain times.
