What you should know about Blair

Tiny Blair city is a 30-minute drive north of Omaha, immediately striking visitors as a place where the great outdoors looms large. It owes its origins to the railway that arrived in 1869, and retains a small-town, easy-going vibe. But it's what lies outside the city bounds that brings the more adventurous visitors here. There are buffalo farms and pheasant shoots, historic forts, and rural museums. Implausibly, there are even vineyards boldly striving this far north. And running alongside is the mighty Missouri, with its beautiful wild nature reserves.

Hotels in Blair

As a small town that brings in only the most curious of visitors, the places providing accommodation in Blair are a fairly select bunch. On the roads leading into town you'll find a couple of motels, while the town center has its own inn. The Super 8 Motel and DeSoto Inn & Suites are 2 motels in Blair offering simple but good-value service that includes free Wi-Fi, a continental breakfast, and free parking.

Things to see in Blair

The city itself has a pleasant little downtown area, with several charming eateries and a good range of shops, all looked over by the big grain silos that dot this town. But it's beyond the city bounds that much of the attraction lies. Closest to Blair is the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, a massive area of wild forests, glittering lakes, and rolling prairie. Huge numbers of snow geese and ducks can be seen here, and bald eagles are regular visitors too. There are areas set aside for fishing, nature trails, and even a visitor center. 10 miles south is the Fort Atkinson State Historical Park, home to the first fort west of Missouri, built in 1820. There are regular demonstrations of living history here, covering the fort's past as a fur-trading center and its role in Indian affairs. Close by is the Washington State County Museum, which tells the story of famed explorers Lewis & Clark, the Mormon Pioneers, and the Nebraska homesteaders.

Good for lovers of the great outdoors

Many visitors booking a hotel in Blair come here because of business ventures connected with this farming community. And with its friendly small-town vibe and relative closeness to Omaha, Blair serves well as an inexpensive alternative to staying in the Nebraskan capital. But it's probably best suited as a base for curious travelers seeking out the less well-known outdoor and historic attractions stretching along Missouri and the Elk Horn River.

How to get to Blair

Eppley Airfield in Omaha is the closest commercial airport, around 25 miles south of Blair. Those planning to travel to Blair and then explore its wider area will need a car, as there's little in the way of public transportation here. To get from the airport to your Blair hotel, head out onto Abbott Drive, staying on it until you come to the turning for US-75 N. Once on this highway it's a straight-forward drive for another 18 miles, until you see the signs for Blair. Then you've arrived— US-75N actually passes right through the middle of the city.
