What you should know about Clearwater

The Gulf coast city of Clearwater, with its award-winning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and endless opportunities for water-based fun, is where Tampa residents head to for their fix of sun, sea, and sand. And it's not only them—the 3 miles of snow-white sand stretching along the coast here make it a real favorite for visitors across the nation. Along its promenade you'll also find seafood restaurants, volleyball parks, beach shops, and aquariums, helping make this a true family resort experience.

Hotels in Clearwater

The long barrier-island beach just off downtown is where the best accommodation in Clearwater is to be found. There are small apart-hotels, spa hotels, and full-service resorts in Clearwater, covering a range of budgets and tastes. The grandest is the 4-star Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa, which faces directly onto the beach. It has 2 restaurants, a rooftop pool, and a health club. It receives great reviews for these facilities and for its childcare service. A contrast is the Brightwater Suites on Clearwater Beach, a friendly, small-scale beach hotel that's much-praised for its staff who are prepared to go the extra mile.

Things to see in Clearwater

As much as the beach grabs all the attention with its wonderfully soft sands and tranquil warm waters, there are plenty of other things to see and do here. One of the top attractions is the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. It's famed as the home of Winter, the star of the film Dolphins Tale, and focuses on the rescue and protection of badly-injured marine animals. As well as Winter, there are sharks, rays, sea turtles, and pelicans to admire. Pier 60 is the place to head when the sun starts heading toward the horizon. Street performers and live musicians help bring the party to the crowds gathered for sundown. Clearwater has more entertainment in store as night falls, with historic Cleveland Street being a focal point for its restaurants, bars, and music venues. The recently-restored Capitol Theater, which entertained in the 1920s with its vaudeville, is today the place to come for live music performances.

Good for families

Thanks to the blessing of its soft sands, sheltered waters, and almost uninterrupted sunshine, Clearwater has a beach ready-made for families. There's an amazing array of water sports opportunities here for both kids and adults, for when you need a diversion from sun-bathing and paddling in the waves. The beach promenade also has all manner of food and drink laid-on in its family-friendly restaurants and eateries. You'll find that family-friendly vibe continues at your Clearwater hotel—most places here provide entertainment and facilities for kids, and some have childcare options too.

How to get to Clearwater

There are a number of flights from East coast destinations that will land at the local airport, Saint Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport. But most come in to Tampa International Airport, some 20 miles across the Bay. Public transportation isn't an easy option for travel to Clearwater from there—the bus service can take up to 3 hours. There are airport shuttle services available though, or you may be tempted to hire a car. The drive across the Courtney Campbell Causeway to your Clearwater hotel only takes 30 minutes, and most hotels have parking.
