The Ace makes a splash in Athens
The Ace Hotel group is celebrating its 25th birthday with the opening the Ace Hotel & Swim Club Athens. Like all the Aces, it caters just as much to local creatives as tourists and is super stylish without being too pricey.
An easy amble from the energy of the Greek capital, a stay here is classic Ace—an idyllic retreat, inspired by the nonchalant glam of the ’70s. Sure, you’ll want to explore the Athens Riviera’s coastal scenery (plan at least one meal out at a nearby marina, where come-as-you-are tavernas dish up unfussy but fabulous fish dishes). But with two pools, restaurants and bars back on site, nobody would blame you for slapping on some sunscreen and just staying put.
It’s up, up and away at these hovering hotels
Want to see things from a fresh perspective? Extending from Dubai’s One&Only One Za’abeel (pictured), The Link hovers 100m high and is the world’s longest cantilever. It’s packed with plush restaurants, and gives panoramic city views. Another hotel in the region has a similar vision: Saudi Arabia’s forthcoming Equinox Resort Treyam’s jaw-dropping 450m-long bridge will offer glass-bottomed bedrooms for views of the lagoon below, and an elongated infinity pool.
Mexico’s Riviera Maya EDITION, meanwhile, has lofty ideals: The resort was built on stilts to leave the mangroves surrounding it undisturbed. So take in the greenery guilt-free, from the elevated grandeur of Mexico’s largest penthouse suite.
Feast for less in Miami
Hungry for a great deal on Miami dining? Continuing through September, Miami Spice Restaurant Months offers set menus at venues throughout the city, with lunch and brunch a bargain $30 or $35, and dinner totaling $45 or $60. Among this year’s participating hotel restaurants are Mediterranean eatery Boulud Sud at the JW Marriott Marquis Miami and Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann at Faena Miami Beach.
Saving all that money on dinner also makes it easier to splash out on a stay at Four Seasons Hotel Miami. The hotel has partnered with British automotive brand MOKE International; check in and borrow one of its cute open-top electric vehicles to drive between restaurants in style.
Hyde checks into London
Keep your ears open for interesting gossip during drinks at Black Lacquer, the cocktail bar at the newly opened Hyde London City. Occupying a seven-story 19th-century building, the hotel is seconds from the Old Bailey, the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales, so legal types and journalists will likely be among the regulars.
While you might want to stay put in the beautiful bedrooms with their botanical murals, the aforementioned cocktails, and the modern Turkish food by star chef Selin Kiazim at Leydi, will lure you to the ground floor. Expect hefty oven-baked lahmacuns (meat-topped flatbreads) and perfect chicken shish kebabs in an extremely atmospheric room.
The hotel moving to a techno beat
Say hello to the all-new sonic experiences at Avani Frankfurt City Hotel (pictured here and top), an exploration of the city’s techno scene that immerses you in the music without the need to stay up for the clubs to open (or the afters to start).
Just minutes from Germany’s Museum of Modern Electronic Music, the hotel offers guests the chance to connect with other enthusiasts on carefully soundtracked neon-lit waterbike rides, go on silent techno walking tours, or dabble in beats-backed painting workshops. Check in and lock on.
