When you know the system and work your travel plans around it this is an excellent option. Great location, quiet, nice new facilities, free google-map phone, etc. If you have not used a Grand Japaning before, I recommend you first go to the office (in Kyoto this is very close to a Kyoto Station exit) where there are staff who can help you. If you just turn up at the address, there is no reception, at this particular address no phone to call the office (there was one at another Grand Japaning nearby), nowhere to leave luggage until your room is ready, and that might not be until early evening. I made these mistakes and more and I have to say the staff were really helpful and found workarounds for me, but it was not straight forward. Once you know how they work you would build in a late arrival to your travel plans.

Poor 2.0
Absolutely horrible experience!!!
Absolutely horrible check in experience. The booking confirmation email clearly stated that it has a staffed reception between 8AM-10PM. But when we arrived at the place there’s no staff at all. Prior to arrival we received no instruction on how to enter the building therefore we were shocked, didn't know what to do when we arrived at the building and found it was locked only accessible via a key pad using a passcode. There’s a small note on the door saying the hotel can be contacted via a local phone number or social media. As short term foreign visitors we obviously have no access to local phone service. I had to use international roaming to call the local hotel number. Upon explaining our situation and provided our booking details the first question the operator asked was whether we are at the correct hotel as he said all their hotels have free phones at reception for guests to contact hotel. I had to repeat the situation that we're at the correct hotel (although it was difficult to find) and we're NOT even inside the building, also no phone outside. After a lengthy debate on the phone while being charged international roaming fees, he provided us the passcode reluctantly after checking our details repeatedly and insisted that they had already provided the code which we never received. This is the worst hotel experience we ever had. The hotel never accepted it was their fault for providing false information. Absolutely appalling service and management.
