Modern and clean but Noisey!!!
Its a nice new slick hostel with private rooms. The night we were there our floor was full of a huge group of noisy teenagers making incredible noise till 4am. Not normal hostel “I’m drunk and noisy coming home” noise but totally unacceptable obnoxious noise. Went to front desk at 2am to complain. They sent someone up to have a look and it quieres down for all of ten minutes. Horrible night sleep. They gave us 10% off the stay which was almost an insult. Staff in general are nice but totally unable or unwilling to help. Bottom line 1: you go to a hotel to sleep and it was inpossible . Bottom line 2: buyer beware - they book large groups of kids so if you definitely want a reasonably quiet stay best look elsewhere. It’s a shame because it’s a very nice place with brand new stylish rooms and a great common area downstairs, all in a great neighborhood close to malesańa and chueca.

The location of this hostel was fantastic - steps from a metro stop on the Gran Via and walking distance from the Royal Palace. Not as social as a smaller hostel would be - but the staff were great and the room was perfect.

Factor in Storage Budget
If you need to store your luggage either before or after checking in or out, remember that in Generator Madrid, you have to pay as you store them in a locker (small one is €2/hour and €7/day). I have backpacked all over the world for years and understand that free storage is not always found in hostels and that it is a source of income for the hostels. But I have also stayed at different Generators in different cities and they had free storage. Of course, each Generator is operated differently and it is unlikely that this will change for Generator Madrid but this share is simply to remind other people traveling to this one that they would need to expect to pay for storage here.

Hotel like quality and comfort
Generator is a nice hostel. Hotel quality almost. The bed was pretty comfortable and pillow and comforter. It was nice to have a separate shower and bathroom in the room. It got pretty hot and stuffy in the room at times. The breakfast was pretty good but you have to get there early to get more of a variety. Also it was kind of annoying having to wait in line at the reception desk to purchase a token. The reception seemed short staffed. I stayed at a Generator in Rome and it was much more efficient to have someone in the breakfast area to purchase it from. I think you have to request information about their services or a tour of the hostel to get information. I didn’t so nothing was explained to me. I think they could do a better job of marketing their services and events. The hostel hostel is in a great location within walking distance to the center and many sites. Metro is very close too. The staff overall was very friendly and helpful. I think they need to communicate with each other more though. It’s a new location so I think a lot of them might be new. I ate at the restaurant once. It was nice to have that option. They didn’t seem to have any daily specials or activities like the one in Rome. I was expecting more Spanish cuisine.

If you are reading this review, you are probably attracted to the hotels hipster, industrial style - you will not be disappointed with this hotel choice. Our family of 4 with two kids loved it. Lots of young people, but also older fans of the minimalist style. Speaking of minimalist - the towels are not included and cost 4 euros each. Our family of 4 pulled off two days on one towel, a truly minimalist feat. The breakfast Buffett @ 7.5 Euros was the best food deal we had in our travels around Spain. It is open until noon, allowing us to have a very large early day meal, and then a second meal at dinner time. The coffee choices should please everyone, especially if you are looking for cafe Americana (which is hard to find in Spain.) The only disappointment was the roof top whirlpools, which were apparently closed for the season during our early October visit. The location near the "Times Square of Madrid" was good for everything: walks to the nearby plazas, walking distance to the magnificent Paseo del Prado, and hundreds of restaurants. There is parking under the hotel. We parked across the street in another underground lot with tricky parking spaces and a no-credit card surprise when we were leaving for the airport! A good place to stay - book early and bring a towel.
