I would recommend Uotoshi Ryokan to anyone visiting Yudanaka. It is a lovely traditional Japanese inn with comfortable rooms and a relaxing hot spring bath. It is very conveniently located near Snow Monkey park, many restaurants, and the Yudanaka train station. The owners are kind and helpful, and even offer to drive you to Snow Monkey Park! We will stay here again if we come back to Yudanaka.

6/10 Good

If you are on a budget, this was a good place to stay with shared bathrooms and sink areas. Shared bathroom has 2 stalls, very small and sink areas have 2 with upstairs and downstairs. I think this place's capacity is 8 parties total. We stayed for 3 nights and chose breakfast. Breakfast was delicious and owners were hospitable. We felt bad that they had to work on New Year's. Most of the surrounding area was closed from New Year's Eve through 01/04/23, but surprisingly Snow Monkey Park was open on New Year's. If you're wanting 3 star hotel amenities, this is not the place for you, but for the price we paid we felt it was reasonable and truly did experience the traditional ryokan experience and the onsen onsite was a plus.

Authentic Japanese Experience
The Owner was so accommodating he even offered for a free ride to the monkey park but we decided to be driven back to our hotel in Yamanouchi. Our one night experience for a Japanese culture was genuine and fantastic. The Japanese dinner and breakfast was so good.

If you want a great rural experience, stay here
A really unique and affordable place, with a genuinely wonderful host. I found this by chance and we were all so amazed by our stay. The place is older and homely, but the rooms and facilities are all fine. We started our stay by taking up the owner, Miyasaka San, offer of dinner, and it was a very generous and wide ranging meal (sashimi, tempura etc), of around 9 dishes set out for each of us. Then Miyasaka San gave us a history lesson on Kyudo (Japanese archery). A few days later we were lucky enough to have a lesson with him, and he also performed the Kyudo ceremony which was an amazing experience. He also kindly drove us up to the entrance of the monkey park walk. We were here in May, late spring and still saw some blossoms of the vast apple tree farms around. The area is a quiet charming chain of smaller ‘towns’ and the real treat here are the 9 public onsens you can visit. Read up on them. This would be a great place to visit in winter for skiing, to get away from the real overrun popular places. You get to Yamanochi-Machi by taking a train to Nagano, and then switch to a local train to Yudanaka which is at the end of the line. This is genuinely a rural place, and staying at this ryokan will only add to the experience. We hope to return one day.

Best Hotel in Yudanaka
This is the best Hotel in Yudanaka - the hotel Manager (Mr Kazuhisa Miyasaka) made my stay there a fantastic experience .. he drove me to the Snow Monkey Park each day, plus provided invaluable information on the local area. The traditional bedroom was clean and spacious and warm too... and the Onsen was amazing.. I had a bath everyday and it was great. He also recommended some great local places to eat. I even managed to have a practice at Japanese Archery... there is no better place in YUDANAKA! I thoroughly recommend it.

The nicest host I’ve ever experienced
I wish we could have stayed longer. The hospitality was amazing, the Onsen was relaxing, Yamanouchi is filled with constantly flowing water so the sound was amazingly serene at all times. There’s archery in the back, and the ryokan is situated in walking distance to so many beautiful streets and the kannon statue. Definitely stay here and interact with your host as much as possible, he is SO lovely!
