Not the building shown in the picture, the picture is of the beautiful old Archimedes Hotel in Ortigia. Actually building was not in Ortigia, but 15 mins away by car & looked dingy and unoccupied. No-one was there to greet us, so we phoned the number on the booking and was told that the apartment was unavailable and we should have had an email from Hotels.com explaining alternative accommodation. The guy then told us an address- 167 Viale Tica and said he would meet us there at 6.30pm. When we got there it was a very poor, dirty area we were met (eventually) by an old lady- non English speaking and showed us up to the flat. It was just someone's old grotty flat in a crumbling, smelly tenement building. Eventually the "apartment owner" arrived, we decided to stay as it was getting late and our other option was sleeping in the car. We didn't use the facilities as we felt they were not up to scratch and we were out of the place by 6am. We couldn't get out fast enough and then found that someone had thrown eggs at our car. Breakfast for 2 was a small plate of canolies in a warm fridge, we got breakfast else where. Strange that the apartment owner did not ask us for passport or photo ID or the city tax fee. All other Hotels.com sites we have stayed at have been very good. This is surely a scam and needs to be investigated. Photo's attached below.
