Language barrier aside, there is a universal language and smiling is free. The front desk attendants were rude and irritated by us every second of our stay. If we asked a question, even through the translation app, it was too much of a hassle for them. Yet, if they needed anything from us, they were sure to call at all hours. The facilities were basic, and what we expected. But the hotel is absolutely NOT non smoking. All the guests are smoking in their rooms and it stinks, due to coming through the extraction system and the corridors are terrible. Breakfast is leftover rice from the evening before. I love budget hotels and can put up with a lot of failings if the staff are kind and welcoming. They’re not here, sadly. And if this were your first visit to China, you’d be left with a sadly negative impression. Because Shanghai is fantastic.

Basic Hotel
It was just basic accommodation. The two girls at the tour desk spoke English and were very helpful. The hotel is close to many attractions.

Wonderful location, Wallet Friendly
The reviews of this hotel were a major part of my decision to stay there, those reviews were "spot on". It is in a classical area, teaming with activity and charm. The Metro is amazing and will get you there from either airport. Take Line 2 from either airport and get off at the "Peoples Park" interchange. You will have to walk a distance through that interchange station to get to Line 8. The overhead signs can get confusing, so look at the big arrow stickers on the floor to guide you. If you plan on using the Metro (DiTie dee-tee-ah in Chinese) by a Metro Card (dee-tee-ah tong) from the service center in Peoples Park Interchange (near exit 20 of Line 8). When you get on Line 8, you can stay by the door since you will get off on the next stop Dashijie (Dah-sheh-jeh). Take exit 1 or 2 once you leave the Dashijie station. I had a single room. It had a queen size bed, a desk, a night stand, and a small shower room, with a western toilet inside of the shower room. Close the door to the shower room and it can be a steam room! I was able to hang my cotton shirts in the shower room, point the shower head against the wall to steam up the room and in a few minutes all the wrinkles were gone! If you are a "foodie" there are many restaurants all around. Walk about 12 minutes East and you are at the Bund and HuangPu River. Front Desk staff was friendly and some could speak a bit of English. No deposit is required on my single room.
