Japanese-style accommodation near Gion
The hotel was in a great part of town, not too far from Gion and a street back from many restaurants; you just need a map and some time exploring to work out where. We took advantage of the hotel shuttle and the staff were lovely. Subway was easy and cheap and only about 5 minutes away. We got in and out of town each day with a couple of dollars spent. There were many temples nearby and an amazing temple complex, the one with the red gates in the forest, across from the Tofukuji station, just a few stops away. The bus to the golden pavilion, Kinkakuji was accessible from outside the Kyoto train station. The sleeping arrangements were Japanese style, sleeping on tatami mats. It was very cosy; our family of 5 were packed in like sardines, which might work for little kids, but a bit trickier with teenagers. There is also no space for suitcases upstairs and it's not a very private 2 bedroom as there is only a screen between the 2 rooms and you have to walk through one room to get to the other, so not really for 2 couples either. Kitchen supplies need rethinking by Japaning as there weren't enough cutlery and crockery items for us 5 and the fit out is very basic if you wanted to cook. Also, no corkscrew. Good shower and bath. The little house was clean and warm and once you work out where you are, economical and easy to use as a base for Kyoto.
