Sand Hotel - a little gem
In my opinion this hotel is the most perfectly located property in Reykjavik. The room was a little smaller than I expected, and turned out to be perfect. The bed was ridiculously comfortable and the bathroom well appointed. They also provided me with a smart phone for use during my stay that had free wifi and therefore I could use Google Maps wherever I was at no cost. I love this hotel.

Underwhelming Experience at the Sand Hotel
Upon arrival I was given a cell phone because the rooms don't have phones. Strange. The hotel is VERY basic despite other people's reviews saying it was THE BEST. They Are Wrong. No Spa, No Hot Tub, No Pool, No Restaurant/Night Food. No dedicated parking. Positives: Breakfast had some nice local options but was relatively basic. Many high quality interior finishes (marble bathroom etc.) Room was Clean, Small and Basic, yet Cozy. Bed was comfortable. The Bar is Great! Bartender named Lekár is the Man! So friendly and kind. He's a longtime local and very nice dude, ask him for any recommendations for where to go. Bar area is comfortable and cool to hang out in. The LOCATION of the hotel is the best part. Right on the Main Street in Reykjavik. Walk anywhere, walk home. The staff was nice. I would recommend this hotel charge less money, considering the LACK OF AMENITIES. They want to be fancier than they are. And the other guests I saw staying there appeared pretentious as well. Good match. Advice for Hotel: Lower your price by $50-$100/night, employ a real chef, think of some perks to give your guests that give a better value for their money. PS Don't be fooled by all of the reviews saying that this hotel is the best, because ITS NOT. Compared to a Motel, Yes, it is a nice hotel. Compared to other "Nice" hotels, it is Just Average.

The hotel is in prime condition and the room design was well thought out in terms of layout and materiality. It's a more intimate type of hotel made up of three individual buildings that have been unified and modernized. None of the character has been lost, and due to its more private nature, it feels a little more like having your own apartment than a full service hotel. Important to note that if you are used to big city hotels, this is will be different. As a frequent business traveler, it took me a second to realize there is no 24 hr room service and the bar/cafe downstairs closes at 10pm. However, you are given a mobile phone upon check in for personal use as well as contacting the hotel for any needs. That being said though, this seems characteristic of the area as almost all restaurants (including bars) close their kitchens at 10pm as well even if they are staying open well into the morning serving drinks. But this is more than made up for by the fact that there is an amazing bakery (Sandholt - one of the oldest in the city) in the hotel on street level. Wi-fi is solid, staff is friendly and happy to give you your space. Everything you want to visit or see in Reykjavik is close by as this is one of the main throughways for the city. The other locales I visited in Iceland had spectacular natural surroundings, but out of the four hotels I stayed at, this was my favorite.
