The guesthouse indicated that check in is until 8pm and ‘rooms are guaranteed for late arrival’. We booked at this place precisely for this guarantee as we knew we were arriving later than 8pm. We used the reservation page to link to the email and number of the guesthouse. First we sent an email (in French) to provide details of our estimated arrival and there was no reply for several days. We got our local driver to call ahead the day itself and thought we were reconfirmed.
When we arrived in Chefchaouen, we were received outside the city by a man who wasn’t the guesthouse owner. With our driver’s interpretation we were told that they had run out of rooms and were putting us up at an apartment outside the old city. We contacted the owner and he gave the same reason and a number of apparently conflicting statements and one strange question:
- we only have 4 rooms but Expedia list 6 rooms so we are full house
- you arrived too late and your room was given away
- how much did you pay Expedia ?
We realized that we were not going to be accommodated at Dar Lalla Khadouj and that we had no choice but to accept the offered alternative: it came with no fresh towels, two used soaps, no toilet paper and a poorly cleaned toilet. We had to ask for fresh towels and paper. The owner brought us the next day to breakfast at his other guesthouse (not Dar Lalla Khadouj) and apologized and said the second night was free. We declined. This listing is problematic.
