A gem in George Town
There are many boutique hotels out there these days, some much better than others, but the Edison George Town has to be up there as one of the best I have stayed in. Smack in the heart of colonial George Town is this wonderfully renovated hotel, brought back to life by the new owners. The restoration of the hotel has been extremely well done and attention to detail impeccable throughout. Our bedroom was well furnished and comfortable, the bathroom, spacious with fine smelling gels and shampoos as standard. There’s complimentary coffee available all day from the dining area as well as cold drinks and snacks. Everyday there’s complimentary cakes between 3 and 4pm followed by complimentary wine and nibbles between 6 and 7pm - wonderful. It does get very hot in George Town so the swimming pool is a welcome sight in the afternoon. The pool is long and narrow and is down the side of the hotel in the shade - it also has a jacuzzi! The staff are amazing and obviously love their job; they can’t do enough for you so take advantage, they will recommend places to visit, the best restaurants and of course shops - I really cannot fault their enthusiasm. If you’re visiting George Town then the Edison Hotel has to be a consideration, I would definitely recommend it. Note - there is a popular bar across the road at the front and there’s karaoke most nights - If you have a front bedroom you will hear it. The singing stops at midnight but request a side or rear room to avoid the noise.

Gloriously restored heritage hotel
This boutique property did not disappoint. The building has been tastefully restored and renovated to maximise the uniqueness of the building's heritage. The rooms are modern, elegant and spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. The renovation has been well thought through with attention to detail. Its location is convenient for transport and enjoying the sights and sounds of the local neighbourhood. The hotel is not trying to pretend it is something it isn't. I had read the reviews of the Edison prior to booking - mostly excellent. There were one or two not as flattering, but that might be attributed to the expectations of the guest. The lounge I did not find the lack of a "big buffet breakfast" an issue - instead, adopted the local custom of several smaller meals over the course of the day. Breakfast choices included Nasi Lemak, with eggs cooked to your liking, cereals, toasts and preserves, fruits and juice. Free flow tea and coffee was available throughout the day/evening, along with light snacks and a happy hour late afternoon. The lounge area where breakfast and refreshments are taken has the feel similar to what is offered in club rooms at mainstream hotels - comfortable places to sit, be waited on or help yourself, relax and enjoy the decor. An inviting shaded outdoor space adjacent to the lounge is available to guests. Rooms open to wide hallway - more like a large extended foyer which runs from entrance to the lounge - providing light an airy ambience.

Excellent for a short stay
We stayed for 3 nights in a suite, which had every comfort you expect. Excellent bed, great shower, spacious room. Given that it is located in a UNESCO protected building there are limitations to what can be changed to the building. The room is fairly noisy as it only has single glass and parts did not have glass at all (only wooden panels). Earplugs are foreseen as the hotel staff is aware of the problem. Across the street there is a very lively street food bar which has live music going on until midnight. So if you are an early bird, the suite rooms in the front may not be the best option. Also to note: the hotel does not have a bar or restaurant (hotel staff recommended a great Italian wine bar just 100 m down the road when we arrived late and hungry the first day). There is a limited complimentary breakfast buffet as well as afternoon tea and drinks served between 6 & 7 pm. There is a well hidden pool which is a great place to relax after exploring the city. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. In summary: great hotel for a short trip. After 3 days we missed the direct daylight into the room (no clear glass windows at all in the room) but certainly did not regret our choice!

Beautiful boutique hotel with excellent services
The hotel was beautiful and conveniently situated at the heart of George town, walk-able distance to food streets and places of interest. Rooms were decently sized, clean and equipped with gorgeous smelling tubes of shampoo, shower gel and lotion. Room amenities were awesome with unlimited supply of snacks, canned drinks, K-cups and daily delivery of orange infused water. Hotel staff were exceptional, in particular Connie and Michelle who were always friendly, helpful and going the extra mile to cater to your requests and providing recommendations on food and places to go. It was touching that Michelle remembered my asking for her recommendation for good seafood places and she even came back to me with a print out of the restaurant with a map and directions the next day. The hotel also has a 24hrs air-conditioned lounge (felt like heaven every time we returned from the blistering heat outside) with free drinks, snacks and fruits. There was also a daily complimentary high tea and wine tasting session that house guests were invited to; it is worth going at least once if you have the time to do so. Pool was ok for a dip but don't expect to get much of a workout from it. There was also a fair amount of mosquitoes at the veranda and in the air-conditioned lounge which is the same as everywhere else in Penang. Overall, a very lovely and enjoyable stay made especially memorable by the wonderful staff. Will strongly recommend to anyone looking for a unique experience in Penang.

Enjoyable stay
This hotel has been beautifully designed to complement the original archetecture with a sleek modern sensibility. It has a lovely atmosphere and vibe. The staff simply could not have been better. The manager took the time to sit with us and map out the locations we asked about, as well as suggesting others based on our interests, and explaining a little Penang history. Staff checked in with us frequently about any needs, while never being intrusive. The hotel offers many little amenities such as bikes, happy hour with wines, and afternoon snacks. We had earlier seen reviews that mentioned breakfast was less than satisfactory, but our experience was completely different -- plenty of good fruit, breads, cheese, yogurt, juice, local delicacies, and eggs cooked to order. The pool is a lap pool, but it is full length, well maintained, and in a serene nook of the property. Fountains in the pool can be heard from inside the rooms, at least on the ground floor, which is very relaxing. I will say that at first glance, our room seemed somewhat dark, but this is actually due to the structure of the old building. Our room also had the "open concept" bathroom, but other rooms have bathroom doors and can be requested. The bed was comfortable, AC was excellent, and everything was sparkling clean. We highly recommend the Edison and would stay there again.
