The Black Swan, Alnwick
Very friendly staff
One of the friendliest hotels I have stayed in. The room (Slytherin) itself was compact, but comfortable with a little road noise occasionally. I only ate once at the hotel, but the meal was tasty and the menu had sufficient variety to make it interesting. What stood out for me more than anything was the friendly service, both on the Sunday, when I arrived, and on the Monday with a different member of staff serving me. That friendliness in itself makes me inclined to stay here again when I am next in Northumberland

Dirty, unsafe and generally poor service
I only paid £60 for the night, so I was expecting the small room and knew it was a room above a pub, that was fine. When I arrived though, the shower had black gunk on it, including on the shower head. The one bright spot of my stay was that the lady who checked me in cleaned the shower for me and was helpful. Much worse though, the deadlock on the door didn't work, so the only lock was just a rickety Yale lock. Also the kettle, which had no safety notice on it or instructions, spontaneously gushed boiling water when it was heated, there was an open jar of peanuts on the coffee tray in lieu of biscuits (good thing I'm not allergic to nuts) and the quilt cover (no flat sheet) didn't look that clean. The cherry on top was the next morning. The standard breakfast time in the bar was 9am, but the night before I requested breakfast at 8am, which I was told was fine. I went downstairs at 8am, only to find that the steep flight of stairs down to the bar was in darkness, and there were no staff in the bar itself. After waiting for a few minutes, I decided to cut my losses and go out for breakfast. The most worrying thing was that the door to the street was unlocked, but there were no staff. I don't know if it was unlocked all night, but if so, that's really concerning and very unsafe. Nothing would induce me to stay here again. The friends I was with stayed at the youth hostel for half the price and with much nicer rooms and facilities, which is what I'll do in future!
