A Nice Choice in Hilo
My wife and I spent our last night on our five-day Big Island self-directed tour at this Hilo Bay Hale B & B, and we were happy with the service, the room amenities, the fresh breakfast, and the location. Even though ours was only a one-night stay, the innkeeper went out her way to make us feel comfortable. For example, she offered to open the side yard gate for us both upon our check-in and check-out so that we wouldn't have to lug our suitcases up and down the stairs as our Lava Room is located on the first floor and the usual way to reach it is by climbing a flight of stairs, entering the front living room on the second floor, walking through a hallway, passing the back kitchen and dining room, and then going downstairs to our spacious room. Speaking of our step-down room, not only was it big and comfy, it also led to a very zen-like backyard where we found a mini-trail that led to a cute koi fish pond on one end and a bamboo grove on the other. Inside, we found plenty of sitting space and a unique Japanese-style ambiance. The design of the bathroom/shower area was also uniquely Japanese. The host was very hard-working and helpful. When she learned that we would have to check out very early the next morning, even before the usual breakfast serving time, she offered to get our own special continental breakfast ready the night before. She also gave us reliable info on where to eat and how to enjoy our last day on the Big Island. It's nice to be able to walk to the bay front.

My experience with Hilo Bay Hale B&B is not good except their bed were comfortable then previous B&B I stayed. I tried to contact owner twice to inform about our late arrival. We had our room key and instructions. There are two lanai / veranda to sit but mosquito will not allow you to enjoy. In morning care taker had asked to keep the door shut to avoid mosquito and bugs coming in. On arrival we had some time and wanted to use washer and drier. After wash clothes were very wet ( water dripping) and it was too much for drier to dry. We lost time and became too inconvenient. We left in early (around 8 am)so we could take some cereals, and care taker came bit early so we had fruit. The house is on a busy street. It does quiet down a bit at night. There are some noises at night from noisy frogs. We could hear vehicle periodically struggling up the hill on and off all night. Considering price and facilities available ( no interaction with owner), I prefer to visit area nearby ( mainly botanical garden, Akaka falls and Waipi'o Valley lookout point ) from Kona or look for alternate location. We stayed in many B&B considering our experience elsewhere this is average experience. If you find review useful, please encourage me by giving your likes.

Our favorite accommodation on Big Island
This is the perfect place to stay. Independently owned, impeccably clean, great sound proofing between rooms, and the most thoughtful and kind host. We appreciated how you can have privacy or choose to be social with the other guests while enjoying the most delicious, well presented breakfast we were had during our week on the island. Chill vibe, not your great aunt’s bed and breakfast. The rain is romantic from the covered porch.

Stay here to make Hilo memorable.
The bed and breakfast facility is beautifully remodeled. Matthew made a killer delicious breakfast. We have traveled to many places in many B.B., this had the freshest most delicious fruit and eggs ever. He is so friendly and the place is very convenient. Felt like home. This is a must stay if you’re looking for an affordable and convenient restful place in Hilo. Hands down better than a hotel.
