This was a very unique property where one could experience what living in an authentic and historic Japanese house would be like. Although the main house was over 100 years old, the maintenance and upkeep made it modern. The actual room had all of the modern features tucked away behind panels. Everything was immaculately clean. The house mother was truly warm and inviting. All of the staff were extremely attentive and helpful without being in the way.

Sleeping in Pre-modern Japan
This is THE PLACE TO STAY in Yamaguchi if you are seriously interested in the politics leading up to the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Most of the key players at that time stayed at Matsudaya and conducted clandestine meetings there. The building, rooms, hot-spring baths, and garden are all lovely.
