Not 5 Star, but a Decent Place
My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights in late Jan and here is our perspective.
For context, we go on three beach vacations each year - primarily to Turks & Caicos. I also travel for work. So I stay in a lot of hotels and have a good understanding of the primary differences in a 3, 4 or 5 star property.
First, Excellence El Carmen is not a 5 star property compared to what most would call a five-star resort. It’s no where near a Four Seasons, St. Regis or many of the top properties in beach areas.
The property is very large and spread out. Getting a room near the beach is a must. Otherwise, you’ll have quite a walk.
The property is well appointed. Rooms are nice (about like a nice Marriott or - Westin). Again, it’s a huge property so where your room is located is important. You don’t want to be in the 8’s, 9’s, 10’s or above.
The grounds are 5 star. Very well manicured and tropical.
The food is like most all-inclusives - decent at best, but fine. With the exception of one restaurant (Spice - closed in Saturdays) there are no reservations. You just show up and wait - which isn’t what I’m looking for on vacation. The breakfast buffet is large, but 2-star in terms of quality. They have a couple of food trucks - but they only serve pre-made tacos, nachos, hot dogs and hamburgers - tastes like fast food.
The drinks are good with plenty of top shelf liquor selections. Just one beer - Presidente…which is typically not on the cold side temperature wise.
