Anstey Hall, Cambridge
Not Quirky, just a bit shabby.
This Hall was amazing, maybe 30-40 years ago. Now it is run down, especially in the "Stable" units. If you read the other reviews, you will see that the lowest scores are in that “room type”, which are cheaper. In the Stable, the carpets are worn out, when you walk into your room you can smell mildew and carpet decay. There is no A/C, which is not unusual for a B and B, but with no cross ventilation, the rooms are miserable if it is 20 C/70 F or hotter. There are large groups of guests from the far East who do not know not to shout and slam doors often in the halls and who think it is okay to play very loud phone cartoons in the dining room (perhaps a sheet explaining the expectations for guest behavior could be offered in several languages?). The staff saw this, their faces showed they understood how annoying this was, but they are young and did not ask those guests to be considerate of other’s wish for peace and quiet at breakfast. The food is adequate. The coffee is not good. The desk staff are very helpful and friendly. The room is clean, even though it is worn out and smelly. The main house may be nicer, but in the Stables are less pleasant than any chain UK hotel. The Stable rooms overlook a Supermarket parking lot. We would rather pay a bit more and have the Stable refurbished, a ventilation system that works properly, and enough staff to assure that rude guests do not behave in a way that ruins the experience of those visiting this grand old property.

Quirky Stately Home
Quirky, fun, awe-inspiring and homely - I loved Anstey Hall. Staying in this charming B&B is like staying in someone’s home and the home is rather stately!

Lovely manor house
it was a manor house. Very historic and wonderfully charming. There was a morning room and a couple of lounges and atmospheric. It would be perfect for weddings. My room was huge, really huge, with a canopied four poster bed and lots of antiques. The bathroom was also huge with a clawed tub and a separate shower and two sinks. There was a lovely garden in the back, too. Free wifi. The breakfast was a buffet but there were hot and cold entrees. There was plenty of hot water. Not enough electrical outlets but I didn’t ask for a power strip. I’d go back anytime.

Pay attention to your guests
We booked into this hotel, based on description, as a charming, high end boutique estate hotel. Room, in main hall was reasonably comfortable, with a large bathroom. Shower was tricky to work...heated towel rack did not work, despite request to have some assistance, which was not forthcoming. Both our room and our friend's rooms were not sufficiently stocked both days. The hotel is charming in a very quirky way, but definitely needs some tender loving cash. Nice snooker room and honour bar. Breakfast room was interesting and very eclectic, and nice variety of food, including lovely fresh fruits. Two nights spent...second day, came home with colds, for aft nap, to find our room wide open both to the hall and to the adjoining suite and construction of new floor happening in adjoining suite. Workmen left, we thought, as they knew we were there, leaving tv blaring in other suite, then came back after tea break and resumed laying floor, power saws, hammering for 3 hours...forcing us to go downstairs. Explained issue that aft to desk, regarding the room being left unsecure and the noise, and to ask they don't start at least until we leave in the am.....again discussed issues next morning, as we were basically forced to leave our own room for half of a day...was advised manager would contact us to discuss, but never did hear from the hotel. Would not have posted this concern if the hotel had taken any notice of our concerns when we initially raised our concerns to resolved
