This is one of the most unique hotels in the world and needs to be preserved at any cost. What it lacks in modern comforts it more than makes up for in the singular vision of Marta Becket (look her up).

    This is no mirage!

Here's artistry in full desert bloom. Broadway Dancer/Painter/Choreographer/Actress, the late great Marta Becket, created a one-of-kind gem with pouring her heart & soul into The Armagosa Opera House. A huge "Thank you, Marta, for daring to dream beyond conventional limits & inviting us into your dream with you!"

Sound good until you stay there.

I booked this Hotel for our visit to Death Valley. By their description, I thought it would be a cute little romantic classic hotel. As it turned out, it was a total disaster. First of all, we almost missed the hotel because it looked like a war torn zone. The simi-white buildings had paint peel on all it's exterior walls. We drove right by it thinking there is no way this was the hotel. But since it was the only building for many miles around, we concluded that this must be it. I had paid for the room at $145 per night at Hotel.com. When I checked in, the gentleman told me we had not paid and proceeded to charged me another $124 for the night. We checked in at 6PM and we were the only guest there. We were escorted to our room. The room was very small. There was a king size bed, one chair and a very old dresser that look like something purchased from a flee market. The rest of the furniture were painted on the wall. The closet was also painted on the wall. The bathroom was in terrible shape and there was a sign asking people not to put anything down the toilet due to the very old plumbing. The shower looked like a makeshift add-on. There was no TV nor phone. The internet was spotty and not there most of the time. There was no mobile phone service leaving us totally isolated. As for food, forget it. We were told to drive 7 miles down the road to a Casino if we want food. We should have stay at the Casino instead if I had known. The staff left at 8PM and we were left all alone.

Enjoyed our stay at the Amargosa Hotel. Although it is older 1924, you stay for it’s uniqueness and history. Liked the painted touches in our room. Bed was comfortable and the staff nice. It takes a little while for the water to heat up for the shower, but once it’s ready it’s hot. The cafe is still closed, so you can drive to the casino to eat. It was disappointing to not get to see the Opera house even for five minutes to take pictures, even with COVID I think this should be allowed.

    Dirty Sheets, No TV

I did not know that Longstreet Casino was close by or I would have booked that instead of this dump when the other hotels in Death Valley were full. It is historical and whimsical but also dirty and decrepit. The info I printed out said a TV was available, it was not! It also said daily housekeeping but there was not! It appears to have had almost no maintenance in decades and is falling apart.

Historic inn, great location, poor condition

Where to begin. I really wanted to like my two-night stay at the Amargosa Opera House. I had watched several videos about the hotel and the legendary Marta Beckett. I knew it was a distinctive historic inn, and might not offer all the comforts of a modern chain. No swimming pool, no hot tub, no problem. However, when I arrived, it was utterly disappointing. First, the condition of the property is pretty poor: peeling paint everywhere, broken concrete on walkways, plumbing issues, electrical wiring is poor (one outlet in my room, which the inn management helped with a multiplug outlet.) The bed and bedding was fine, no sign of bed bugs. The carpet was, well, dated. There's a window heating and cooling unit. There was precisely two lights in the room, the ceiling light and the desk lamp. There was a vintage chair-desk unit, which wasn't comfortable. The bathroom is small, no outlets. Sign indicating "water not potable." I'd been advised by reception that getting hot water in the shower would be troublesome; "let it run 10-15 minutes." The first night I couldn't get hot water, so I used a face cloth to wipe myself down. I did get it to run hot the next day. So it's an historic inn, more comfortable than camping, but not by much. It's managed by a nonprofit org, and they have a huge challenge. It will take millions to bring it up to current standards for wiring, plumbing, carpet, paint, etc. I love historic inns, and wish them well. Can't recommend in present state.
