Van Gilder Hotel, Seward
Very run down. When we checked in, there was hair on the toilet and on the sink; no towels, shampoo nor soap in bathroom, had to request; windows were very moldy and so was the shower stall. Linens and towels, when we received them, were very new and fluffy so that was good. Front desk closed most of the time, even at 8:30 in the morning when we wanted to check out. Our windows looked out to the building next door that was all brick so not much light coming in and really no view of anything. You had to call a phone number to get someone to the front desk. We had to throw the keys through the locked iron grate covering the door to the front desk. Hotel manager was not knowledgeable about anything in the area as he had just arrived from AZ for the position about 2 weeks prior, so not helpful on area restaurants, sites, parking on street, etc. We stayed two nights. When we returned to our room after our first night, our room had not been cleaned, no new towels, bed not made, etc. When we called the Manager he said that his guy who cleans the rooms only cleaned the rooms where someone had checked out because he had to be at his other job at 1 p.m. Ridiculous! If that was the case, the Manager should have cleaned the other rooms himself or paid someone else to do it. We requested additional towels, shampoo and soap to get through day 2 and night and check out.

Great Location, Moderate Value
Hotel location is great. Friendly Staff. Price seems a bit high for cleanliness of facility. Most noticeably, the comforter in the room appeared to have some stains on it.

Beautiful slice of history with comforts of today
This hotel is the antidote to the generic hotel setting found so much in Alaska. It actually had authentic history that was palpable, which is so rare here. But the hotel balances out its age with good beds, nice sheets and towels, and clean, fresh decor. We only wished the shower stall was a bit bigger (or a claw foot bathtub would fit so well!) and that there was better tea and coffee offerings downstairs (styrofoam cups just don't fit with this gracefully aging space.)
