A shadow of its former glory
I stayed here about 20 years ago and arrived hoping for the same unique experience. Sadly, the small touches that gave the hotel a special charm have gone. Art deco features have gone to be replaced by mock wooden flooring, vinyl veneered furniture and mushroom emulsion. The eye for detail is lacking. The bedside lamp corroded, the toilet was dirty as was the wall beside it and the back of the bedroom door. A complaint only caused the loo to be cleaned but not the rest. It’s a real shame. The grand restaurant with the commanding view over the bay is now an events area. The tables for two in the current restaurant have no view; we had to ask for our table to be moved which the head waiter kindly did. I know hotels need to move on (physical keys with apes as key rings were cute in the past but sensibly replaced with modern cards) but little touches like a glass of sherry on check in wouldn’t cost a lot. Cava in the room was a nice touch (but may have been an apology for the loo). There’s much still to love about the hotel, but it’s previous art deco charm, the feeling that Agatha Christie could be in the next room, it’s elegance and wow factor are resigned to history.

The Rock Hotel is wonderfully situated and packed full of character. The staff are amazingly friendly and I’ve rarely felt more at home in a hotel. Come for the views. Come back because you know you’ll be well looked after

Overall I would stay again.
I stayed in room 122. Sea view balcony twin room. Negatives first, the bathroom was very small and the toilet was insanely close to the wall! The bathroom also had a leak which leaked out the door after every bath/shower. The room walls were thin so you could hear next door conversations and noises in the hallway due to hard floors. We were unable to get a shuttle from the airport or to the airport even though the website claims you can, there was always a reason why they couldn’t arrange it or would recommend a taxi!? Also, the Rock hotel is perched on a VERY steep and long hill, so not recommend for the less fit or older guest. POSITIVES: the location is ideal, 10-15 minute walk to the Main Street and main square, 20 minute walk to the Marina and Ocean Village. Because it is perched on the side of the rock of Gibraltar, the views are amazing!! Large balconies! Views are of the harbour and are ever changing. You can see Spain & North Africa clearly. CABLE CAR is 5 minute walk. The rooms are clean and well stocked, nice size wardrobe and bedside tables. Coffee & tea making facilities, mini fridge, complimentary water bottles and nice bathroom minis. Offers a laundry service. Room service is not for breakfast. Restaurant downstairs had a nice menu and good food. Staff are friendly and helpful. Overall I would stay here again but not in that room. I stayed in 123 last time and was perfect.
View from sea view room 1st floor.

Nice hotel, not so nice restaurant
Hotel itself was nice and hotel staff were friendly. Views were good. Rooms could use some modernising and looked a bit tired in some areas. Restaurant and bar were fairly poor, service staff were unfriendly and seemed put out at the prospect of doing their jobs. Breakfast was a 5/10 but very expensive at £18 per person.

Sleep But Don’t Eat
The Rock is a lovely hotel in a great location. The service, amenities and room comfort are as promised. Lounge Bar was nice but overpriced even for a hotel bar. Breakfast was basically a buffet Full English and some pastries; definitely not worth £35 pp. We would stay again but not dine.
