The Stern is more restaurant than hotel
There is no dedicated reception, so regardless of the time of day, hotel guests are dependent on the availability of bar or restaurant staff for assistance. That said, the staff do try to be helpful. Because the guest rooms are located off a central stairwell that also serves the upper dining area and are above the restaurant and bar in this smallish building, cooking smells and tobacco smoke (endemic in much of Europe) do find their way into guest rooms, at least on the second floor. Similarly, outdoor tables below the room windows are a source of noise and, especially, smoke well into the evenings when the windows are open. The restaurant is very popular and prices seem to be in line with those at neighbouring establishments. We enjoyed our meal there and service was good for a very busy evening. Of the staff we encountered, Caroline is a true gem.

A good restaurant with rooms
A good location, 5 minutes walk from the station and 2 minutes to the River and old bridges. More a 'restaurant' with rooms as there is no separate hotel reception or facilities. Check in is at the Bar ! The buffet Breakfast was very good, cereals, fruit juice, excellent coffee and a range of good fresh bread with cold meats, boiled eggs or jams and 'home made' fruit yoghurts. My single room was simple, the bathroom very well refurbished and clean. The only downside was traffic noise on the West side, it was very hot and I had to have the window open, there was a busy road 50 yards away. Take ear plugs or keep the windows shut. The other side of the hotel facing the square will probably be much quieter.

4/10 Fair

An unpleasant experience at Stern Luzern
Stern Luzern We had a terrible experience at Stern Luzern. We had booked a month in advance for a triple room. However, we got an attic room which was at best a double room. On arrival payment was taken at the time of check in. Our request for viewing the room before paying was turned down. Request for early check in was also turned down. On check in we requested a room change but were very rudely told " we can't build a new room for you and we cannot throw out anyone". We are not used to this kind of strong language. The lift which barely manages to fit in one person with one piece of luggage runs only till the 4th floor. Our room was on the 5th floor so we had to lug up our suitcases. This is not what we had expected as the pictures on the website for a triple room were different, definitely not of a small attic room. We had an otherwise wonderful trip in Switzerland.
