Good hostel in a rough neighborhood
The hostel itself is fairly good, with friendly staff and clean spaces. The dorm rooms are secure and tidy, and the hostel is quiet at night, even if the street is not so bring earplugs. The are the hostel is in is not very good. Main issues in the area are homelessness, dirtiness and open drug use. Most homeless people are not aggressive or attempt to make contact, apart from asking for a dollar. Some might behave erratically, so keep your eyes open. I had no issues with the homeless as a solo female traveller, but would avoid walking alone at night, and would mainly stick to going towards union square, and not deeper into tenderloin by myself, as streets get worse there. The shuttle service the hostel provides is not trustworthy. I told them I needed to be at the airport at 4 am but got there at 4.30 after the shuttle picked up 4 more people, some of whom had pickups scheduled for when I was supposed to be at the airport...

Travelers Beware!
They charge $1 which you have to pay if you want a towel big enough to dry off after a shower and it is non-refundable. Biggest scam ever!
