Go for Gino
We were totally misled by other reviews of the hotel which we read. We were told not to take too many suitcases as the stairs were steep. We re-packed into one case only to find there was a very attractive stone ramp for us to use. Someone had written about the sassi or cave rooms. It was a perfectly normal hotel with a superb garden location, not at all in the side of a mountain. One reviewer had warned that you would have to call the son of the owner if you planned on arriving after 6pm as you would get lost. We thought it was a little family run place, especially as the price was so reasonable. It was a very sophisticated hotel, with excellent staff, especially the very admirable and amenable Gino. My friend couldn't eat the fish on the fixed menu and so he liaised with the chef and organised a fine Italian meal. Our thanks go to all the staff for making our time in Matera such an enjoyable experience.

The missing hotel
was very nice hotel. Down side - no English speaking staff, took 3 hours to find hotel, we phoned the hotel 3 times for directions - no help at all. Our Italian is not fluent. Asked at least 6-7 businesses - directions all over the place. Signs to hotel in totally different names. Breakfast need to get there early as do not replenish. Was totally p.... Off by the time we reached the hotel.

have to recommend this hotel. The location is great if you have a car which we did. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and well kept. The room itself was lovely. Clean and comfortable with a balcony overlooking the gardens. Staff extremely helpful and courteous.
