Don't plan on the cafe bar
The people at reception were very nice & helpful. The cafe bar was supposed to serve food until 9pm but when we went in to order something they said they had stopped serving 15 minutes ago (8:30pm). They told us we could get food delivered but didn't have any menus or places that would delivery. This was very disappointing because after a long day on the road we just wanted to get something to eat & relax.

A Dorm But A Whole Lot More For The Money
As long as you understand you're staying in a college dorm, you'll be fine with this accommodation. Rooms are en suite so no bathroom in the hall. Great cafeteria breakfast with all the Scottish breakfast goodies--scrambled and fried eggs, bacon, sausage, black pudding, broiled tomatos, mushrooms, baked beans, pastries, breads, fruits, cereals, porridge, juice, tea, and coffee. Washer and dryer on site. Wifi is free but may be a bit difficult to figure out at first as the dorms also have a restricted wifi network for students. Just keep looking because there's also a free wifi network for tourists as well.

Cringeworthy
Positives: reception was always friendly, ample free parking, breakfast, laundry facilities available (ask reception for available leftover cards), proximity to town centre and golf courses. Cons: very small room (less than 2 feet between the bed and one wall, and between the foot of your bed and the closet, 3 feet of space on the other side), thin walls, uncomfortable bed, but worst was the bathroom--since the shower floor was level with the rest of the bathroom, water got everywhere so you're walking with wet feet to the carpet. Very unhygienic. Bring slippers if you decide to stay here! Not sure how thorough housekeeping services were either. One day we didn't get extra toilet paper, another day we didn't get enough clean towels though the old ones were placed on the floor. Albeit, it's a dormitory, and the only reason we booked here was because no other place could accommodate us for our entire stay. Knowing what I know now though, I would've split accommodations just so I wouldn't have to stay here longer than necessary. Unfortunately, staying here made me feel like I wasn't on vacation.

Stay in Blackadder Hall, it is fantastic
Don't hesitate to stay in Blackadder Hall if you are visiting St. Andrews. Yes, it is a dormitory for the University of St. Andrews and not a 5 star hotel, but you will pay dearly for a 5 star hotel in St. Andrews (or anywhere else in Scotland) and Blackadder Hall is very very nice. The location is fantastic, a very short walk to the rest of the University, the Old Course for those into golf, the Cathedral and Castle and even to the beach where the iconic running scene in "Chariots of Fire" was filmed. Everything was clean and convenient, the people working there were truly wonderful when I staggered in around 3:00 am after a series of miserably gone wrong flights from California and the breakfast was awesome, really awesome. My only negative would be that the bed was a bit softer than I would prefer. I'll definitely stay there if I can next time I'm in St. Andrews, which will be in about 3 months. Finally, Agnes Blackadder has to be the coolest name ever and the woman it is named after was quite someone. How visionary of St. Andrews University to name this building after her. Blackadder Hall is far and away the best value for a place to stay in St. Andrews.
