Haunted stay in jail
It’s jail. Literally. If you want to visit a haunted place, this one is definitely to go. But if you art not, don’t go there.

Charming, historic, central, taxing
Very cool idea for a hostel/hotel. We are a family of four that stayed in two double cells. There was plenty of room. The only issue for some may be that the cells aren’t closed off from each other, so at night you can hear everything. I repeat... everything. (Quiet hours start at 11pm.) Breakfast spread is fine, downstairs in a common area. Guests have use of the kitchen and a big fridge. Jail tours are conducted for free every day at 11am; you don’t need to be a guest to take one. Parking is available on site, but for a fee of $12 per day, which was a bit annoying considering the taxes that Canada lops onto your bill when you check in. Be aware, room taxes are not assessed by hotels.com (it’s right there on your purchase agreement) and they are steep. If there was one thing that annoyed me about this stay, it wasn’t the occasional loud door slam in the middle of the night— it was that the taxes weren’t levied by hotels.com. I like knowing exactly how much I’m going to have to pay when I stay somewhere, and with taxes and parking this place ended up being just as expensive for us as as staying at a pretty swank hotel downtown. Area around the hostel will be nice, but next-door neighbor is a museum currently undergoing construction. That said, we did not notice any noise from it, even though our rooms faced that side of the property. Also, good shopping, great food choices, and the historic core are all very nearby and accessible by foot.

Don't want to return to jail
Check in was amateur. Clearly the 2 agents had nothing to do, as they just gabbed and gossiped while a crowd gathered for the witching hour of 3 pm, which is check-in time. I was told that the "room won't be ready until 3 o'clock". Well, I reserved a jail cell, which is not a room, which I'm certain was well ready before 3 o'clock. Silly to keep guests sitting, waiting and listening to the inane banter between the employees behind the desk. The cell was as described. The problem is that just because it's a jail cell, a clever gimmick, I don't want to sleep on an uncomfortable mattress when I'm paying for a nights' sleep. It was very uncomfortable, with a sliver of a pillow. No soap, liquid or otherwise, is provided in the shower. Kind of clean facilities, but not spotless.

Wonderful Hostel
It was an amazing stay. The bed was comfy, the bathroom was spacious and the kitchen had all the utilities. The staff was also very friendly. The location is in the center of the city and very close to UofOttawa and other embassies.
