Hard to arrive. Hard to leave.
Because of the abnormally crowded conditions due to the Christmas Carnival, I needed to search out the hotel on foot. One of the reception staff members followed me back to the car and guided us through the narrow passageways and throng of holiday festival goers. Exceptional customer service! But I recommend that the hotel sent an email or text to arriving guess to warn them of the extreme difficulty in finding the property.Although the staff referred to us as the king and queen, the room size was more appropriate to a squire. And while the breakfast buffet offered the standard fare, the views from the restaurant were stunning. It was the perfect beginning to our tour of the castle. Perhaps for a jaded European this setting might be routine, but if you are new to castles, this village impresses. On a clear winter day we were able to enjoy stunning vistas that included vineyards, winding alleyways, and the majestic towers. I strongly recommend that you avoid the festival season and pick a time when the crowds will be thin, otherwise it feels more like a Disney attraction than a medieval castle.

The hotel was hard to find and no instructions were provided with our booking on how to get there. GPS was no help. we drove down narrow cobblestone streets only to find we needed to back out of the street, circled around the walled city asking numerous people for directions who tried to guide us in Portuguese. When we found the hotel the staff was very helpful in getting our car into the walled city and parking the car for us. it was apparent that we weren't the only ones who had problems finding the place so why not provide instructions with the booking. The hotel is unique and steeped in history but we were overall disappointed in our room. While charming, nicely decorated, and very clean, the room smelled musty and we could hear everything from the room above us, their voices, the guests walking around, the doors opening and shutting and the water running. We were really looking forward to our stay and were willing to pay the premium to stay at this renowned location. Unfortunately, the helpful staff and the great location did not make up for the disappointing hotel room.

Very, very Happy with our stay :-)
Our entire stay at this historic castle hotel was a wonderful adventure. In a career of staying at hotels, I can honestly say, this stay was memorable, romantic, tasteful and one we will never forget. Let me say to all who read this, it's a maintained 10th century Castle that has been remodeled to include modern amenities, but it is still a castle. If you've ever possessed some curious romantic fantasy to play and explore and dine like royalty in a real castle, this place is for you. It will certainly stand out in your memories as special and unique and wildly romantic. All other hotel stays in your life will simply be compartmentalized into other categories, because this hotel will exist happily alone into a very special category all its own, 'that one stay where you were treated like royalty in a real 10th century castle in Portugal'. Happy travels and safe adventures to you all.

Pousada Castelo de Obidos
A narrow gate and picturesque streets lead to the Pousada Castelo de Obidos in the upper parts of the old city. The white houses with their clay roof tiles, the well-preserved fortified wall and the heavy stone stairways which surround the castle provided a true medieval experience. The staff of the Pousada welcomed us kindness and with a little chocolote cup filed with ginja. The inner courtyard of the castle is magnificent. We stayed in the Dona Philippa room, within the castle, which was very clean and comfortable. To add to the experience, we dined at the Pousada restaurant which is beautifully decorated with antique furniture. We were pleased to have a chance to taste local products and wines, as well as Portuguese classics. The table service was impeccable. We finished the evening with a walk on the fortified wall to take night pictures of the city and of the castle. We highly recommend the Pousada Castelo de Obidos.

Amazing castle hotel experience!
Amazing experience to sleep in a medieval castle! The Staff at the Pousada are lovely and incredibly helpful. Please note that if you have accessibility issues this may be a difficult place to navigate; parking is difficult in the old city and you may have to carry luggage over cobblestone hills; however, once the staff saw us approaching they grabbed our luggage and wouldn’t let us lift a finger until we were settled! We stayed in the Tower Suite, what an experience! Please keep in mind that not all castles were known for their comfort, so while the mattress wasn’t the most comfortable, and the bathroom was a bit small and dated, the experience far outweighed those very minor inconveniences. Sipping ginja and looking out over the city from the castle walls at night was an experience I will never forget.
