A true historic gem
Staying here was a treat. Bear in mind, this is a university facility, so rooms are rather basic--clean and perfectly adequate but not luxurious. However, Madingley Hall is so much more: it is a splendid exemplar of 16th century architecture set in a Capability Brown landscape. To take a walk before breakfast and admire the building and its setting is a truly rare experience for the traveller; so too is to take the morning meal below an elaborately carved stone mantel and decorated ceiling, surrounded by large portraits of the family that once owned this. One can understand why Queen Victoria chose this place to house Prince Albert during his university education. The young people serving dinner in the pub and at breakfast could not have been friendlier or more accommodating.

Wonderful option for staying in Cambridge
Only one night was available here when I tried to book. The first night I stayed in Cambridge was in a really frumpy, old, cramped bed and breakfast that cost more than Madingley Hall. The difference was startling, and I wish I could have stayed here both nights. Madingley Hall is a historic college building and estate about 4-5 miles northwest of the city center. It is very close to the American World War Cemetry and close to the M10 motorway. There is a park and ride facility a couple of miles away, adjacent to the M10 intersection. From here, there are buses every few minutes into Cambridge. This is the way to go rather than try to find parking in town. I can't say enough about this stay. The buildings and grounds are historic, elegant, pristine. All for the price of a bed and breakfast stay in the city. The staff were very friendly, my room was excellent, the breakfast first rate. They also offer evening meals and there is a bar as well. There may be times when rooms are not available, as it is the accomodations for Madingley College, who offer short courses to which people travel from all over England to attend. If you are looking for accommodation in Cambridge, and you see this available...GRAB IT, it truelly is a unique experience.

Not a hotel standard. More like a student hall.

This is a university not a hotel!
The grounds are nice although I arrived in the dark and left first thing in the morning, this is not a hotel it needs to be clearer on the site, the 5 star rating is not for the room but the grounds. The room is very basic and is perhaps a halls of residence / used to be as it’s very similar to my experiences 20 years ago! It’s very much an education facility not a hotel.
