Pleasantly surprised
Been a couple of years since I stayed here last. They've done some extensive renovations and it's good to see the House regain some of its glory. Great staff, great service.

Picture your perfect wedding at quaint old hotel
We were here for my nephews wedding and it was great. The night before we had a BBQ and the food was delicious. I thought the chicken was the best and my wife preferred the salmon. Either way all the food was great. We had drinks in the bar and had a great time. Drinks are a little pricey but not outrageous. On the day of the wedding we went down for breakfast which was included in our room rate. The food was excellent again, a lot of choice, fresh, hot and tasty. The hall where the reception is held is perfect, it can hold about 80 people. After the reception we had drinks in the gardens which are very well maintained. The food at the reception was also perfect, the wine that was included could have been a little better, but that may have been picked by us, not sure. Great location, rooms were very well maintained. We were in the old portion of the house which I think was built in 1914. Nearby there are some ancient abbey ruins within a 5 minute walk. If you just want to get away or have a wedding, I would recommend this place.

There was an unpleasant chemical smell in the room which gave both of us a sore throats and the hotel was unable to exchange our room and were only able to the offer of opening the windows to try and alleviate the smell

Don't bother!
Our stay was very disappointing. The Hotel is focussed on weddings, and commercial travellers. We found the excessive use of perfume, combined with the strong laundry smells in the lifts from the basement overpowering. When we then were unable to open the windows (other than a small tilt) in the modern wing unbearable. We were given a new room.... it was a single.... where we could open very small windows. So we thought fair enough, we'll move hotels. Then we were offered another room in the historic wing, which was much better and we were very grateful to the helpful staff member who supported us with this. We stayed 5 nights, each morning at breakfast the hostess asked us if we had stayed with them before...... yes, every morning! I remembered her, and the place wasn't that busy! The crowning debacle for us was the one evening that we thought we would eat in the restaurant, recommended by our friends who live in Barrow. When we entered the bar area we couldn't find anywhere to sit, as the seating was being cleaned, so there were signs on the seats. OK, we thought, we'll sit at the bar. We approached the bar, where the single male on service was very busy with his phone. When we got his attention, and asked for a drink, he basically indicated that there wasn't anywhere to sit, so we left! This hotel has the capacity to be a fantastic destination, but for us it fell very short of making us feel welcome for the extent of our 5 night stay.
