Great Location!
The hotel and service was so-so, but the hotel location is great for a casual visit of the Santo Domingo Zona Colonial. If you’re obvoiusly a foreigner, expect to be hassled constantly by pan-handlers and street venders, always check your bill and returned change, and on our way out headed towards the airport we were pulled over by the National Police demanding we pay them an “exit fee”.

You won't beat the location anywhere in Santo Domingo. Right in the heart of the Zona Colonial, this place is a gem. Yes, it's older. No, it won't have the creature comforts of a four- or five-star resort, but it makes it up for it with its charm. A few other things: * Be aware that the quality of the rooms can vary greatly. Read the room descriptions carefully. Some of the windows have views of the plaza; others are quite literally windowless. If you get a super-cheap deal, it might be because you have chosen a less-desirable room. As it turns out, the interior rooms are not bad, because they're quiet and cool and a nice place to sleep after a long day in the sun. But they can also be very tiny and claustrophobic. * The restaurant is great. I'd compare it to a European-style cafe with good coffee, drinks and food. I ate there a lot. The service is not attentive in the American tradition, but that doesn't mean it's bad. If you need something (including a bill), just ask for it. They're not going to come by and "check on you" frequently in the American-waiter style. * There will always be someone who speaks at least a few words of English; but it doesn't hurt if you can speak a few words of Spanish, too.
