Shoulder season great value
This self catered hotel was wonderful in every way except for the very high 4th floor with no lift! But, we knew that before booking so it was expected. Front desk staff was very courteous and helpful. If you're looking for it by street numbers beware because number 37 doesn't follow a logical (American) odd side of the street numbers. Google maps will land you in front of the cathedral. Just keep walking past the Conan Doyle spiritual center and number 37 will magically appear!

Not big on service
Be prepared that this property has four floors and no elevator so if you are a top floor guest you will get a bit of a work out. We needed a skillet and more coffee and the desk clerk told us that he was there to check people in and out and could not assist us with that but did not offer a solution for us. We did not get clean towels the second day from our room service and in addition we had less glassware than before the cleaning person came. The safe is not screwed and the separate seating is a small couch less than a foot from the bed.

A Wow Boutique hotel close to Edinburgh action!
First stop in a tour of Scotland and Ireland, and the Palmerston has set a high level of expectation for us. The building is lovely with high ceilings and beautiful decoration. The only challenge with these old style buildings is not having a lift (elevator). Fortunately, the gentleman at the counter very kindly helped us carry our bags up the tall staircases. So glad we weren't on the third floor! We loved being able to walk down to nearby Princes street to shop, or catch the tram to Waverly station for the sightseeing or city buses. The hotel is near a beautiful working church and the bells ring occasionally.
