Exceptional 10.0
Excellent location and bakery!
The covered walking/shopping district of Otaru (Miyakodori shopping district), not to be confused with the main tourist area, spans a half dozen blocks, and we were pleased to discover the Authent Hotel Otaru was placed directly in the middle of the north to south arrangement, providing perfect access to non-touristy restaurants and local shops and bakeries. The train station is just 3 blocks west. To the east by a few blocks are all of the downtown tourist attractions, including the canal, coast, museums, historic buildings, glass shops, music box museum, tourist-oriented shops and restaurants, Marchen Intersection, and sake distillery. Elevator parking for 1000 Yen per day (<$10) was conveniently beside the hotel, taxis were across the street (I've rarely seen a city with a higher percentage of roaming taxis relative to the number of pedestrians), but the most pleasant find was the excellent Ondine bakery on the covered street side of the hotel building. For only a few hundred Yen, we breakfasted on wonderful sweet. savory, and immensely satisfying baked items, perfectly made hours earlier in the adjacent baking room, which appeared to be staffed by 2 full time bakers, and was large enough to be nearly the same size as the retail space. Of note were beautifully chewy and succulent corn rolls with plenty of corn kernels, chocolate bread and chip rolls, apple tarts, and the nearly a dozen other items we tried. Rather than fancy, Ondine has top notch baking quality.
