Cain Valley Hotel, Llanfyllin
Good6.0
It was atmospheric as it is hundreds of years old with a sagging 17th century staircase. An attractive looking hotel in decent condition. The room was ample with en suite bathroom. It was good value and I enjoyed my stay precisely because it felt old and attractive. The check-in clerk was nice and was keen to help. All in all the staff was making a concerted effort to provide a nice stay. The one thing I did not like was after I had reserved dinner, and sat down at the attached restaurant which is separate from the pub area, after some minutes I was told to leave, that my seat was reserved in the pub area without explaining why as the restaurant was practically empty. I was placed at a small table in the pub area on a chair too high for the table itself surrounded by drinking patrons. I did not feel comfortable as they crowded around me towards my back. The 4 patrons were not discourteous or rude, however I felt self conscious with a group of people standing next to me while I was the only one seated at a table. The steak and ale? pie was fine not memorable. I was not explained why I needed to vacate the dining room for the table at the pub. I am a non drinker and would have preferred the more sedate atmosphere of the dining room. This experience prevented me from fully enjoying my stay which in all other respects was memorable as in my home area it is just not possible to stay at a centuries old inn which has been used for this purpose for many years.

Lovely stay
Only a one night stay but the rooms were very good value for money and the food is to die for. the breakfast was top notch and the evening meal was as good as it gets.

Spot on
What a great find. Of course it is an old property but the room was immaculately clean and the evening meal and breakfast were spot on. It’s not the Ritz but it has charm and atmosphere and the team there really look after you.

Hotel = good! Hotels.com = less good!
The Cain Valley Hotel & staff were great. It was only booking through Hotels.com that caused some issues. Firstly, when myself & 2 friends tried to book 1 room to share, the only option we were shown was a double room with an optional child’s pop-up bed. Instead, we booked 2 rooms, only to arrive & discover my friends’ room had a double & single bed in it & then I had a double room of my own! The hotel also had a 4-bed room available, but were unable to change the booking at that stage. Secondly, Hotels.com took the £50 for my room from my card (via Eviivo) 2 days before we arrived, but when we got there, the hotel had no record of my payment and wanted to charge me again. It was only because I had proof of payment that they held off, but I had to leave my card details with them in case the money didn’t come through. Not ideal. Other than that, we had a good stay! The hotel is lovely, relaxed & my friends’ room was particularly nice. Mine was a little tired in style (linen etc) & quite dark (needed some lights in the corners) but perfectly comfortable & had a heavenly deep bath. I would stay again.
